RUSH is better and probably sold more albums than any of the bands some on here like from '95 till today, combined. And its for good reason. They rule.
Its not the RUSH fans fault mainstream music was so far behind the curve.
40 years of albums have to count for something. Rush's sales place them third behind the beatles and the Stones for most Gold or Platinum albums (24 gold, 14 Plat. 3 multi-platinum). They have been cited as an influence by various musical artists, including Metallica, Primus, Rage Against the Machine and The Smashing Pumpkins, as well as progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater and Symphony X.
Okay, so they've been around a long time. Kudos to them.
But one of their so-called classic songs is about trees. Freaking trees.
Like I said, I can name probably 18 Rush songs I really like. The rest, to me, is just bizarre. No question they hit a chord with their fans, I just don't understand it.
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.
The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced the're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.
There is trouble in the Forest,
And the Creatures all have fled,
As the Maples scream oppression,
And the Oaks just shake their heads.
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"These oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
