  • Hate to say this but Paul's vocals kept that from being over the top. I fully acknowledge he did well for his age with the song. That said, Helter Skelter should have vocals that approach and go over the line of control. Paul kept his voice in control the whole time. I understand this is a function of age more than anything.
    Contrast it with this

    • Late 20's vs. 60's = that's the difference. Still very impressive to even attempt that song at that age.

      • Compare Paul to Jagger or Joe Cocker or any other old dude and his voice held up the best. Other guys voices who have held up well include Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues and John Fogerty (former CCR).

                • Nice version. Even though it isn't apparent on this song, Grace Potter is a much better singer than Grace Slick.

BTW, I disagree on your assessment of the live version of Helter Skelter. I think the vocals are a great fit and more than carry their weight.

My only issue with that video is the ridiculous editing. It was worse than the production of a college football game on FOX. I' don't know why the fuck they think they have to cut back a forth so much to add the sense of excitement. It was already there.

                  • As far as rock singers go, you be hard pressed to find many better than Grace Potter. She's got a powerful voice, she does a lot of covers live and most of them stand out.

I realize I'm going to be in the minority here on this. I feel like I did watching the remnants of The Who sing at the super bowl. Some rock performances are so iconic that I feel sad by seeing an artist come out and attempt it. I know Paul actually sang it quite well in the vid. But to have Helter Skelter without any of the vocal rawness diminishes it.

This is just my take on it and I acknowledge I'm splitting hairs on this one. Kind of like having a very good cake but with weak frosting.

                      Just my 2 cents

                      • I kind of agree. I saw The Police on their reunion tour in 2008. Sting can still sing but he lost the energy that the songs had from 1977-83.

On the flip side, I saw the Pixies in 2010 and Black Francis sounded like he did 20 years ago. THAT was a great show.
