    • Dogs get adjusted to work/school schedules but, there is a big investment with teaching a pup.

Several times I adopted dogs that were 6-7 months old and prefer raising a dog from a pup but, there are advantages to getting a dog a bit older, especially if it is already housebroken. (The trick is breaking the other bad habits they already think is OK)

My current one is the most independent thinking dog I have ever had. She marches to her own drummer and I let her as long as they fall within the rules of the house. She also was about 7 months old and shuffled around from shelter to shelter before we got her.
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

      • Sorry to hear of your losses SLF. That's a tough situation made tougher. Was your father ill?

Yeah, her schedule is busier than mine.

I guess when I decide to do it, the best time would be during my summer holidays. My contract gives me six weeks off every summer that I could spend training a dog.

          • SLF I am sorry to hear about the loss of your dad and Shadow. I totally remember him as your avatar.

Thanks for all the sympathy, gang. We all are heavy hearted but got a little better as the day wore on. Not sure how soon we will pull the trigger on another, but we will know when it's time. The house just seems so painfully quiet and empty without her!

            • Several years back when I lived on a lakefront property about five miles from the city my daughter came across a beautiful lab-golden retriever mix. The dog was perhaps three years old, was simply beautiful and was built for speed. It wore a blue collar but no id. There were only about 12 homes on the street and we checked with the neighbors but it belonged to none of them. We advertised in the paper for three days then decided to keep the dog. My daughter was extremely happy, and I loved the waly this animal acted as a protector to our cocker spaniel, who had a habit of chasing snowmobiles on the frozen lake without regard for any traffic. The new family member whom we had named Cody, would tear after the spaniel and force it back to shore. We only had the dog for about three months. It shed horribly and my wife developed a severe allergy. I was able to find Cody a great home on a farm not far from us and were told we could visit anytime.
I had come to really admire the dog because it had been so well trained by the previous owner.. From my front door to the street was about 50 yards and the nearest house on either side of us was another 50 yards. Across the street was just bush. Anyway I would let the dog go for a run every morning and without fail when I would go out about an hour later to call him in, he would be lying on the doorstep with the daily paper right beside him. What I loved about that was the fact I wasn't a subscriber!!!

Acknowledgments......I had seen those dog pics on another site,..... SLF although I knew about your dad, I did not know that Shadow passed at the same time... That's a tough one...My sympathies again.....And Tony.....The pic of the dog as a passenger with a man then a woman driving was hilarious. Kayrone......Get the job first then reward yourself and the family with a new pooch....It will happen sooner than you think.
