  • Exactly.

    ****SPOILER****

Bale's own man shot off his foot. Also, would a man who is supposed to be the "baddest" man of the time help out that guy? Why would he turn on his gang like that too and turn himself in? Because he felt bad for him? I seriously doubt it.

    ****END SPOILER****

Oh, and Gretchen Mol is very tasty. She is so hot in a very understated way.

lol.. exactly.. He's going to A. help the gimp get on the train B. Shoot his own man who went thru hell trying to catch up to him C. escape from jail anyway.

So basically the whole movie was a waste of time.

      Gretchen was indeed very nice.
      F#*K OHIO!!!

You're not only an amazingly beautiful man, but you're the greatest football mind to ever exist. <-- Jeffy Shittypants actually posted this. I knew he was in love with me.

      • It's a classic Elmore Leonard story. Very archetypical characters.

        • What other stories has he written? Because, I have to say, this one wasn't a real winner.

          • I disagree. I thought it was excellent examination of a man living by his own code.

I'd bet he's written 100 books and stories. I think the best movie translation was "get shorty" with Johnny Travolta. Out of Touch was really good as well.

(on top of being a great writer, "Dutch" lives in and supports the Detroit metro area.)

Agreed on Ben Wade's change of heart at the end. It just seemed rather sudden after his escapes early in the movie.

Oh, and Gretchen Mol is a perfect wet blanket female. You need someone to play the negative nancy, she's the right choice.

I don't think Ben Wade had any change of heart. He had no plan to go to jail. However he respected (Christian Bale's) need to do right by his family. That fit well with Wade's belief system. Family and Self over Corporations and the State. The rest of the gang didn't get it, because they didn't have a code, and cared only about getting money and buying women...

                • I don't remember if I liked Get Shorty. I did like Out of Sight and I thought that was his.

SLF, you put it in a way I can almost buy into but I still think it's weird that he turned on his gang at the end if he had been with them for so long and they were so loyal to him.

I don't think he turned on them, so much as he was never really loyal to him. Running with them helped him acheive his ends, and vice versa. But he was never really "with them"

                      • Well now I can decide if I should watch it. I think I'll pass though I love Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. It will be on HBO soon enough.

Speaking of movies based on a book. I didn't read the book so I don't know how it holds up to the movie but I have a question for anyone who has seen Gone Baby Gone.

Do you think he made the right decision?

My simple answer is yes, I will wait to see what your answer is before I elaborate.

                            • Well. I was really torn and went back and forth but in the end, I do believe he made the right decision. I think she would have had a better life had he made a different decision, but it was not anyone else's choice to make. And you never know. You have to do the right thing. I don't believe in manipulating the right thing because then it's the wrong thing. Laws were broken, several people died as a result and still, she's probably going to have a crappy life. But you have to do the right thing. Right? Sometimes I wonder which is why I asked the question. Can't wait to hear your thoughts speeds.

I mean maybe the universe had a plan for her that involved being raised by a drug addict loser mother. And the hard knocks will shape her into a person with a mission to effect some sort of change.

I agree, he not only did the right thing but the only thing he could do. Like he said who is he to have to explain to a teenage girl why he took her away from her mother. Having been raised by an alcoholic mother I feel like I have some sort of feeling towards how the kid would feel. I mean nothing to the extent of what this girl had, my mom was great and her drinking never made her do anything to us. She just had a lot of embarrassing stuff happen to her and when I was older I noticed that she would pass out in her room around 4 o' clock everyday. She's sober now, but I am getting a little off subject. I think what you said about the universe having a plan for her may be dead on, because I know that seeing my mom the way she was when she was drunk has had a huge affect on me. Because of her drinking and making a fool of herself and also knowing that alcoholism runs in the family, I don't drink alcohol at all. I have a few times with friends when I was around 18 and once or twice when I first met me wife (bad influence). I haven't drank anything in years though and don't even intend to for the rest of my life. So yes I feel like she could have seen what her mother was and been the total opposite or she could have been just like her, ya never know.

My last point about him doing the right thing is, if he felt like she shouldn't have been with the mother let her take her child back and then call social services on her. Just like anyone would in the real world, there are proper channels to go through when a child is in a bad home and I understand they make take a while to happen but the proper steps need to be taken IMO. All in all I thought it was a great movie and it did exactly what it was meant to do and start conversations like the one we are having.
