‘Memories of Murder’ … South Korean murder mystery/ crime drama/ thriller is damned good. Well crafted that kept me invested with its mystery and entertaining narrative. Some dark comedy mixed in. Great acting and cinematography. Absolutely love the character arcs of the two leads. Chilling ending. Love the random side cop character that would just drop kick people. Same director of ‘Parasite’ in Bong Joon Ho. Basically felt like South Korean ‘Se7en’ and David Fincher vibes. Not as perfect as ‘The Hunt’, but close.
Learning that there’s A LOT of hidden gem foreign language films out there that I missed over the years. Refreshing movie feeling…

Re-watched ‘Dune: Part 2’ in IMAX this weekend while I’m in LA. Damn, that movie was made for this viewing experience with the sound, score, and cinematography. Incredible. I also love how polite the crowd was and then people were name dropping directors after the movie ended. Say what you want about California, but at least people respect film here.
…
Couple others:
’Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ … I had a good time watching it in theaters. It’s what you would expect watching this movie. Dumb, fun, and turn your brain off popcorn action. The story for the humans isn’t bad too… Scar King villain solid.
‘Past Lives’ … Very subtle way of showing a coming of age/ love story. Slow burn and dry at times. Though easy to feel attached to the two main leads. The ending worked for me… which made the viewing worth. Big picture “fork in the road” message about life that is emotional.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

This would be cool if you had a home theater to put your DVDs in or hack the touch screen to be a front end for a Plex server. Admittedly I didn't use Redbox much the last few years but still went occasionally to grab a movie we couldn't find to stream or it was cheaper than renting from Amazon. Sad to see them go.
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, the parent company behind Crackle, Redbox, and the streaming service of the same name filed for bankruptcy last month. Earlier this month, Redbox stopped working and locked customers out of their movies, and the shutdown of DVD rentals and its streaming service soon followed. Now the company faces another […]"Your division isn't going through Green Bay it's going through Detroit for the next five years" - Rex Ryan

Big fan of the movie. Watched it on repeat several times after school back around 2007. Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. Highly entertaining for a western film as a person that never got into the genre.
A Knight’s Tale, The Last Jedi, and 3:10 to Yuma.
I see a pattern of agreement when it comes to movies!
Here’s a random movie thought that I was thinking about the other day…. The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is really fun. A good time. Aged well and can certainly re-watch.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

I miss good Russell Crowe. He was such a compelling actor on screen for that run of about 15 years. That will still peak out every now and again in some of these crap movies he does, but most of it is just him mailing it in.

That movie is pretty much the end of that prime Russell Crowe era. It's also the last year before what we now know as the Marvel Superhero begins in earnest. Because of the superhero movies, streaming and the destruction of the movie theater since COVID, I'm not sure if we are going to see actors have true heaters like that.
It's too bad we never got a Master and Commander sequel.

Master & Commander is a great movie.
In related news, saw a trailer for Gladiator 2 yesterday. I was not too keen on the idea, but have to admit I'm in now. Trailer looked great.
And 87 year-old Ridley Scott, in addition to Gladiator 2, has 5 other projects in the pipeline that's he's directing - 3 movies and 2 series.

Now that we are retired we can go to the movies during the day and avoid all that. That is one advantage with going to Christian movies because they don't seem to bother with those.
I got tired of seeing someone with their cellphone on ruining the movie with their constant chatter and wanting to upload either the movie or their reaction to it in real time, without caring one bit what the rest of the people in the theatre felt about his (or her) messing up the movie experience for everybody else.
Now, I'll either go buy the Blu-ray/DVD of a movie I wanted to watch, or rent the digital.
No long lines for snacks, no sticky floors from spilled drinks, and no annoying kids.
And, I can pause or playback a scene if I want to if I had to go to the restroom or wanted to rewatch an important scene."I hope to see the Lions in the Super Bowl before I die"
