  • Curious to see if “Oppenheimer” gets close to 11 Oscars wins tonight. Hope it does well because the other nominations aren’t on its tier.

Saw a couple other nominated films recently. Very brief thoughts:
    - “Anatomy of a Fall”. My 2nd favorite of the bunch. Strong drama/ mystery with a well made court room arc.
    - “American Fiction”. Pretty good. Nailed the satire idea it aimed for. Some funny moments. Jeffrey Wright is sneakily great in everything he’s in IMO.
    - “Poor Things”. Disappointing given my expectations, but still solid. Mostly entertaining from start to finish with its weird vibes. Emma Stone carried this film with her bizarre role.

Still need to see “The Holdovers.” Not really interested in seeing “Maestro” …

    • Killers of the Flower Moon was overstuffed and too long. Or it wasn’t enough and could have used a limited series treatment. It’s one or the other. Scorsese has earned the right to do whatever he wants but just too many flourishes and filler. Lilly Gladstone is amazing, would be a deserving winner. DeNiro was also good as the bad guy. Not sure about what Leo was doing. Kept expecting him to blurt out “Some folks call it a sling blade, but I call I a kaiser blade . . . “ with that vocal choice he made.

I absolutely loved American Fiction. That was such a smart movie.

I watched it last week and was really disappointed. The acting was fantastic but i just didn't like it. Gladstone was great as were Leo and DeNiro. One of the things that respect about those 2 are that they're heavyweight A listers but they play their roles perfectly. When I watch Will Smith (who I think is an amazing movie star) or Tom Cruise (again great movie star but he hasn't been a great actor since A Few Good Men) you see Will Smith and Tom Cruise playing themselves. You'll see Will Smith playing Ali or Tom Cruise playing Reacher as themselves.

They're not like watching the movie Ray where you forget that's Jamie Foxx and you feel like you're literally watching Ray Charles. Leo and DiCaprio pull that off with their roles and its really awesome.

          • Decided to watch The Holdovers and it’s fantastic. Easy to get invested in the lead characters. Nice blend of drama, comedy, and 80s nostalgia. Kinda sad in the 2nd half of the film.

That said… It’s finally Christopher Nolan’s time tonight. Let’s ride.

            Agree about Lily Gladstone.
It’s a good drama film about a sad part of history. Don’t think there’s anything exceptional about it. Many of the same narrative beats and repeated themes from Scorsese.

Lmao. Yeah, that scene cracked me up. Jeffrey Wright’s character just kept pushing the joke.

            • The Holdovers is great, classic Alexander Payne. But it’s set in the early 70s, not 80s.

              • I'm glad that Christopher Nolan finally won the Best Director Oscar last night.

He's been one of the best directors out there the last 2 decades, and a master of just about every genre that he's done.

I found it well made, but completely unengaging. Didn't care about any of the characters. but that's just me. But it was definitely set in Christmas 1979. The New Years scene shows the new year as 1980.

                  • That’s going to come as a surprise to the director.

The film, says the director, is trying to take the idea of the period film “one step further”: not just to conjure up the mood of a bygone time, but to recapture a movie-making sensibility that it pioneered.

                    • Yeah, I was totally wrong. Must've confused some other movie with a 1980 New Years scene
