  • Yeah…I just don’t care for Mann’s style. The guys has been directing movies since the 70’s and I think I can only see 3 I like (Manhunter, Last of the Mohicans, Public Enemies). His actors are always muted, speaking in soft mono tones (while dark ominous tones are played in the background) and then there’s some explosions and shit.

Scorsese‘s films speak to me…colorful characters with vibrant scenes and music.

It’s like comparing Motown to Pink Floyd

    • I like both directors but it's a hard comparison because Scorcese is just so prolific compared to Mann. It seems like Scorcese movies post Goodfellas has succumbed to bloat. Way too long.

      • Speaking of that, I noticed Scorsese’s new movie “Killers of the Flower Moon” will be 3 hours and 26 minutes long. The trailer came out the other day. With how almost Scorsese film must feature De Niro or DiCaprio… of course combine the two actors in this!

As for Michael Mann… I love “Last of the Mohicans” and “Heat.” “Collateral” is good. He also is the executive producer of a new HBO series “Tokyo Vice” that is decent. I don’t think Mann is a top tier director, but he’s made some quality stuff.

        • Killers of the Flower Moon looks good, but you should be able to tell a story in less than 2 1/2 hours. That running time is indulgent. The trailer looks ok, but Leo's accent leaves a lot to be desired.

I think Mann is a top tier director, there isn't that many of them. He just doesn't do that many movies.

          • Mann is definitely a top tier director…his movies are well made and cinematography masterpieces, but I just don’t prefer his style.

I know people love Heat….but to me it was a very mediocre movie with 2 compelling scenes (shootout and diner conversation). But again…that movie (all of his movies really) was visually fantastic in a multitude of ways.

If we’re picking robbery movies…The Town or Inside Man are my personal favs

            • In think Heat is great, but I like it less about the heist aspect and how the characters are written. Pacino is the coked up cop chasing DeNiro. DeNiro lives by a code that he abandons at key parts of the movie that results in his downfall. Great casting as well. It's probably the last movie before Pacino becomes a full caricature.

No way it's that long and hits a theatre - coming in at nearly 20 minutes longer than The Deer Hunter.
If you've ever seen The Deer Hunter - you know that is a distance too far - and only an epic story can bridge it.

                • I'm pretty sure it is coming in that long in the theater.

                  • I will admit…Scorsese’s recent offerings are more fit for a streaming experience (as opposed to a theater).

But his stuff is so good. The first time I watched The Irishman (Actual title: I Heard You Paint Houses)…I though it was long and (and to use some of Froot’s terminology) over-indulgent.

                    Upon a 2nd screening (and then a 4th, 5th, 6th,…) I’m starting to think it’s one of his best.

But I’ll also admit I love gangster movies…have family ties into this culture. All of my dad’s friends had nicknames…my godfather is known by the name “Happy” and was a high ranking teamster’s official in the 60s/70s/80s, my Brother’s godfather was assassinated in the early 80s. So from a cultural perspective, Marty is my guy.

                        • I never read the books but I loved the move A Man Called Ove and the remake of A Man Called Otto was getting really great until Hollywood had to Hollywood.

                          Did anyone else see it?
                          F#*K OHIO!!!

Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

                            • I finally saw “Goodfellas” last weekend. Very good movie.
So many similarities between it and “The Sopranos.” Possibly a disservice to me having watched The Sopranos before Goodfellas because everything felt familiar. Also read that over 20 actors in appeared in both Goodfellas and The Sopranos.

Other takeaways: There are two famous memes from Goodfellas. Ray Liotta laughing and Joe Pesci walking into a room. Glad it now makes sense to me.
I don’t LOVE the mobster genre, but they’re some quality films/ TV series that come from the genre. No doubt.
                              “The Godfather” > “Goodfellas” IMO.
