I liked Tropic Thunder a lot. Robert Downey was hilarious. And it's funny that he was nominated for a oscar for playing the pompous "oscar winner"
I think that is the Awards guy have some fun about themselves and it takes some guts to be a white guy guy playing a black guy to play into black stereotypes. Reminds me of the episode of the Sarah Silverman show called "black face". So many Landmines there he could of landed on and really pissed people off. Instead only that catholic commercial got any flack.
I doesn't really matter they don't like to give to many awards to people who have shown they can earn more. DiCaprio in theory should have won it at least 3 times. Downey is another one that as always been on the cusp even if he doesn't get nominated. No this award is going to the one person who can never ever win another. This one was tied up the day Heath died.
I recorded it and plan to watch later tonight or this week. I've heard from a couple sources it was a good show.
I haven't seen all the best supporting actor nominated performances so I'll refrain from judgment at this time. I remember when Ledger got Oscar buzz I thought it was only because he's dead but he did give a performance worthy of a nod at least.
Speaking of DiCaprio, I recently saw Body of Lies and liked it a lot. I especially enjoyed the contrast between Crowe's and DiCaprio's characters with Leo in the thick of things in the Middle East and Russell busy carting his kids around. One major flaw was the romantic relationship with DiCaprio and the nurse. There was no chemistry and not enough to justify his actions, imo.

I don't want to suggest that he or his part didn't deserve the Nomination. But When it comes to people that are always in the discussion vs. once in a life time performances (think Forest Whittaker) they tend to pick the once in a life time performances rather take the chance that its the same people every year. Since this wasn't just a once in a life time performance but last performance (technically he has one more coming out) of his life, there was no other option.
Did he deserve it? Yes. But his death made him go from deserving it a near lock.
Point taken. Reminds of the year Alan Arkin won for Little Miss Sunshine when clearly the best nominee was Djimon Hounsou for Blood Diamond. I think the academy wanted to grab a chance to give Arkin an oscar. Hounsou was robbed.

I watched the awards show last night. All in all pretty good. Not too much cheese.
There was a cool song at one point that I didn't recognize and now I don't remember when it played. I'm thinking it played during the romantic movies of 2008 segment and the song sounded like U2. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I liked that the boring awards were made interesting in the way they were presented. I also appreciated the way they presented the top awards by bringing previous recipients and having them discuss the nominees. Kind of cool to relive the other moments.
I'm afraid I don't know the song you mentioned, Rommy.

Agreed.
