  • Quickly glanced at “Oppenheimer” reviews and supposedly it’s excellent. No surprise for Christopher Nolan. I just hope he fixed the issue where you can’t hear half of the character dialogue. Yeah, I get that he’s going for realism there. It’s simply a better experience for the viewer if you can understand what someone says.

However, it’s unfortunate that my local theater is basically sold out for it this weekend. Maybe it will be a great time to see MI7, Indy 5, or … Barbie? (Only kidding about the last one).

One reviewer said 25% of the dialog was not clear (which is still way too much IMO). Another said there were no issues. I'm holding out paying until I know for sure there are no dialog clarity issues. Tenet was one of the most frustrating movies experiences I've ever had because of the dialog issue and am not going to get suckered twice.

------------------------------I hate that. When I watch a movie I definitely want to hear the dialogue. It makes the whole movie. Part of the issue is I have hearing loss from cranking up music in the car and headphones as loud as it would go.

          • It’s ideal as a viewer. My big complaint about recent Nolan films.

The opposite side of the spectrum is unrealistic shit like this scene from MI2 when Tom Cruise and Thandiwe Newton are casually talking in a high speed car race. No way they could hear each other! Such horseshit.

Anybody else have to watch with tv with closed captioning because audio on television is for shit also?

              • Yep, and yet my recent hearing test they say I'm fine. I also have problems in crowded rooms where there is loud music or background noise. My brain seems to focus on the louder noises. I spend more time shaking my head yes and pretending I can hear.

                • Here's a long article on this problem, most.of the time it is a mismatch between the sound setup of the movie and your television speakers. For some reason it is terrible for streaming services. I never noticed the issue on a DVD or Blue Ray, but that makes sense because you are playing it off a disc.and the sound is not.going to be compressed and they are putting in time to mix it correctly for a DVD.

For Nolan, he's mumblecore adjacent. I don't know hink any of his films are strictly listed as mumblecore but it's close.enough.
Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster is already infamous for its barely audible exchanges. As sound technology advances, why are films getting harder to hear?

presbycusis…as the forum speech and hearing specialist, I can give you a lengthy explanation of which specific structures are failing and causing sensorineural hearing loss.

it might put you to sleep…but my audiology teacher (Jerry Church, Syracuse university) was a good one, so I remember a lot.
