  • But the I'm glad Will apologized crowd needs to know that that apology was from Will's publicist to the media. It was a fake apology that had nothing to do with Chris Rock.

      Everything about this is fake.

What would be the purpose of this fake incident? What is Chris Rock or the academy gaining from any of this? 🤷‍♂️

i mean people go full tin foil jacket and say covid is fake, the war on ukraine is fake, but at least there are avenues that the brain could turn to to believe that, IF you had slight acceptance or even fruitcake tendencies.

But Rock being slapped? Why fake?

        • The big storyline about the Academy Awards prior to Sunday was about it’s drastic decline in viewership. Not about the actual films. What could the Academy do to get more people to toon in? Create an award for best box office movie of the year? Ideas like that. They actually did cut out some of the awards from the show for this reason.

I do find it to be very convenient that this Will Smith - Chris Rock incident happened in the year when it’s viewership numbers were questioned the most.
Also the Juwan Howard incident that happened a month prior. It seemed like nobody cared about college basketball in February. All of a sudden, Juwan Howard slaps someone. Then EVERYONE in the sports world is suddenly fired up about something in college basketball. I mean shit, SportsCenter (ABC owned) actually had segments about how Michigan basketball would bounce back airing on its show. Unheard of. I’ll note that the Academy Awards is broadcasted on ABC.

Not saying it was fake. I don’t care. It did do its job and get people fired up about the Oscars once again. This dwarfs the Ricky Gervais speech from a few years ago. The fact that I typed out more than a paragraph on this thread about the Oscars… dammit. Can’t believe it got me sucked in the conversation. Well done.

Side note. Happy to see “Dune” win 6 Oscars. Can’t wait for “Dune: Part 2” to storm the Oscars in a few years with a Return of the King-like impact. Believe in Denis Villeneuve! My favorite active director.

          • Well Smith is going to lose millions going forward. I highly doubt he did this to help them get their viewership up. Illuminati maybe? Jokes people.

BTW, I haven't read around to know if it is true, but, it is being bandied around that Rock is a 7th degree black belt so to all the "He wouldn't have slapped..." doesn't fly. Dude went psycho and I don't think it mattered who said it.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

            • It's a terribly negative incident that has really damaged Smith's reputation as well as tarnished the Oscars (again). Having something like this happen late in the show doesn't increase ratings, the show is already over. In fact, I had TiVo'd the show myself. We watched half of it and went to bed. I saw the headlines the next day and deleted the show, had no interest in watching any more.

But, how do you seriously allow an assault to take place and then hand over an Oscar to the assailant shortly afterward? I guess it may not have been clear what really happened in real time, that's the only thing I can think of.

              • Apparently officials asked Smith to leave and he refused. Sounds like they probably regret not escorting his ass out.

                • Yep, and whats worse is he is caught on camera “gettin’ jiggy wiv it” to his own song at the after party. Oscars security must be a shower o’ pussies.

Agree to disagree on the other thing, Future. Listening to Chappelles comedy content, and looking at those guns for arms; he bursts Will after that slap, absolutely no doubt about it. 👌

Yeah…but the optics behind a bunch of White/Jewish academy board members telling the black dude (who was about to win best actor) he had to leave would have been awful…half the narrative would have been “a white guy wouldn’t have been asked to leave” and how Will was humiliated.

Damed if you do and damned if you don’t….IMO, they made the correct decision in letting him stay, if for no other reason than the negative attention stays on the right person this way. No one can claim rush to judgment

Remember that the Academy also gave a standing ovation for Roman Polanski when he won the Oscar for Best Director in 2003 for The Pianist, despite not being able to be in the US, since he ran out of the country at least 2 decades earlier for sexual misconduct with a minor in 1977.

                        • My only opinion on the Polanski thing….what he did was awful (though no one in Hollywood has ever shaded Jack Nicholson for his role).

but I completely understand why he ran…from a legal perspective it was a complete tire-fire and Polanski was about to be treated very unfairly (from a legal viewpoint).

If they can't ask someone to leave because they're white and he's black the United States has more problems than I thought. He assaulted another man on camera. I love Will Smith as an actor but if that's true they asked him to leave and he turned into my 4 year old saying no and refusing to leave, i'll have lost a lot of respect for him.

IDGAF about your opinion. Your constantly wrong about almost everything so.

But I will say this, I disagree with Kareem or anyone else that thinks this has anything to do with anyone other then Chris and Will. It is no reflection on AAs. No more then Dahlmer is a reflection of his race. He isn't and they are not. If a kid sees that and goes all Will, that is more a reflection of that kid's parents.

I disagree with Nick in that it is a wash either way unless they shoot him dead in front of America. A vast many things terribly worse has happened and people didn't bat an eye. It was also an AA who was assaulted. I have seen on social media people saying Will wouldn't have did it if Chris were white. And they allowed a black man to be assaulted and then his attacker celebrated. I disagree with all that. Anyone, of any race, putting race in this is a reflection of that person.

And again, what they do have no bearing on me or the other 25% of the world that are of African descent.

Why are we still talking about this?
