Saw "Annihilation" - 9/10 ... well ... it's definitely a thinker. Sci-fi/ thriller with great acting, cinematography, and composing. Slow burn. The plot? Still processing it.
Not as perfect* as "Ex-Machina" (which was a 10/10 to me), but this was maybe close. SPOILERS ahead in white text: It depends on how you view the ending. 1st act was build up... The 2nd act was excellent. The scene when they were tied up and the bear creature came in. How the girl that died became part of the bear. Omg.. horrifying and brilliant at the same time. 3rd act? Not for everyone because it's big on Sci-Fi. Seem to be hit with themes I haven't processed yet. The alien creature that mimicked Natalie Portman. VERY bold. Again, the more I think about it, the better it gets.
Finally saw "Thor: Ragnarok" - 9/10 ... what an entertaining, funny, and just great overall joy ride. Not a surprise considering the director did "What We do in the Shadows"AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

I am out of town.
Will watch on Saturday.
I haven't read your spoilers, but:
In the book, psychologist is really the antagonist. This is achieved through an incredible twist which is really established early on and core to why the book is trippy on numerous levels. I understand this isn't the case in the movie, which is really, really too bad -- but understandable in terms of time constraints.
Will write back

Three Billboards was great.
As a big fan of the original 'Death Wish' I will watch the remake. Though the trailer looks like a terrible safe, by-the-numbers, Bruce Willis box-ticking, SJW wet-dream.

Oscars ... seen a lot for 2017 thanks to MoviePass ... here is who I think will win and who I'd pick personally:
Best Picture - Will win, Three Billboards. Should win, Lady Bird.
Lead Actor - Will win, Oldman. Should win, Oldman. Day-Lewis was spectacular too.
Lead Actress - Will win, McDormand. Should win, Ronan, duh!
Supporting Actor - Will win, Rockwell. Should win, Rockwell. That long take scene.
Supporting Actress - Will win, Janney. Should win, Metcalf.
Best Director - Will win, del Toro. Should win, PTA. All of these noms are so damn great.
Animated - Will win, Coco. Should win, Coco. Is there any doubt.
Original screenplay - Will win, Get Out. Should win, Lady Bird. Shape of Water ripped off a South Park episode "Free Willyz" btw.
Cinematography - Will win, Blade Runner: 2049. Should win, Blade Runner: 2049. If Deakins doesn't win this, I quit. That'll piss me off.
Original Score - Will win, Phantom Thread. Should win, Phantom Thread. It was amazing. Love Dunkirk's too. Zimmer fan here.
Go Blade Runner: 2049, Lady Bird, and Dunkirk!

I probably would have liked it A LOT had I not read the book.
Far more horror than the book (The book is more "spooky").
Was a great sci fi movie, I feel like watching it again, and I think that should be something to be happy about.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

Not Dunkirk's year.
It is crazy to me to look at Nolan's filmography w/ zero oscars. He his becoming the Leo Dicaprio of directors. I get that they aren't what you think of in terms of conventional Oscar winners, but obviously that barrier has been broken quite a bit lately, and he will have one of the most modern pedigrees of all current film makers when finished.
Pretty bad considering a movie like HURT LOCKER took best picture just a handful of years ago.
This year is awfully competitive.
Get out, Dunkirk, Bladerunner, 3 Billboards, Phantom Thread, I, Tonya, Lady Bird, Shape of Water.
Really just a shit ton of unanimously 85%-99% good movies.
Ya, I need to watch Annihilation again. I was pretty distracted by Real-Time book comparison that I don't think I got to take in how deeply unsettling a few of those scenes were.

The list of directors that have never won an Oscar is an impressive list of big names. Welles, Kubrick, Tarintino, Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Nolan. Nolan’s time will come.
Happy to see Blade Runner 2049 take home 2 + Dunkirk with 3.
Lady Bird shut out makes me sad.
Phantom Thread should have won best score.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

Best actor was stacked. Oldman perfected Churchill (just like Lithgow in "The Crown"). Daniel Day Lewis was also brilliant in Phantom Thread. It's too bad Franco wasn't nominated. Easily top 5.
When Oldman dropped the line "you can't reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth" , nearly shit my pants. The best.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

It screws guys like Tarintino and Kubrik that don't do a whole lot of movies (Tarintino has in fact said his 10th movie will be his last for awhile). They held out on Kubrik and while heady work, his last few movies were disappointments and then he died. Tarintino has had about 3 pieces that could have won, 1 specifically that should have won. But he only makes Genre films and chances are his next and probably last movie is going be a bit too much for the Acedmy.

I fell asleep watching Justice League last night, but the first half (I think) that I saw was pretty terrible. A discombobulated mess with a terrible CGI villain. I'll try to slog through the rest tonight. They really need to take these movies out of Zack Snyder's hands.
Update: the 2nd half was just as bad. What a mess of a movie.Last edited by Mainevent; April 24, 2018, 12:03 PM.
