So encouraging to hear a Ridley Scott boot-up with stunning accomplishments like:
-Not desecrating the whole story line
-Not desecrating the desecrations of the original story line
-Honoring mythology; honoring film's universe
-Having such a grasp of the mythology and universe, that expanding it wasn't as seemingly difficult as re-tracking the evolution of human technology in real time
-Not deciding the core the original film should become just an ancillary, passerby-ode, afterthought, while pursuing what Scott thinks should be the brave new focus.
Presumably:
Not sacrificing third acts for strange and tedious second acts that attack the merging of lovecraftian horror and clearly ripped-off erotic fan fiction foreplay scenes from michaelfastbenderhottalk.com .................................................. .
(Hey, Ridley, so, we were thinking. Let's have a scene where both droids meet and the droid without sentient restraints enlightens the restrained droid through allegory... He teaches him how to play the flute while all the humans wander around an ancient alien laboratory. Also, while teaching the flute, we will hammer down on the perfect specimen subtext through tongue-in-cheek reference to sexual tension -- a callback to the compounding reference of perfect specimen (uhh which we really need... Because you really want to show us how xenomorphs only came to being by the ingenuity of humans own creation. It's truly a sci fi tragedy mr. scott. So honored to be a writer. Our flawed being created the perfect being, who in turn created the perfect being in their view; the ultimate killing machine w/ no moral or altruistic constraints.). A triumvirate of paralleled- masturbatory simultaneity.)................................................. .................................................. ..................................With the sensibility of a bunch of AI-ethics 101 undergrads trying to put together a final project warning us of the dangers of AI.
TL;DR:
Glad Blade Runner isn't going to end up like any of the new aliens (or Total Recall reboot; my initial fear)

Omg.... possibly, a masterpiece.
As someone that loves "Blade Runner" and "Arrival", this is what I wanted. It will be a slow burn to some people... the ordinary people. NOT the dumbed down action movie that isn't Blade Runner. Investigative... more questions... stuffed with layers of meaning.
A++ give that damn cinematography Oscar to Deakins tomorrow. 10/10, my favorite movie of 2017.
Last initial thought: If you are not a fan of the original, this isn't going to be your film. Love or blah. I'm in the love group.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

The new Blade Runner has a 2h 43min run time?!?!
Damn! That's serious. Isn't that one of the reasons Ridley Scott got so beat up on the first one because he had a 4 hour cut he wanted to release?F#*K OHIO!!!

Another comparison to 2049 I've seen that makes sense: "Westworld."
I LOVED that TV series because the ideas it presented. Investigative, Sci-Fi themed, asking questions like what does it mean to be human. However, some people thought it was "boring."AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

The run time wasn't bad.
Biggest complaint in relationship to run time would be: Dialogue cadence.
Nearly all characters delivered their lines in the same way, or rather, the characters who assumed the most screen time.
Which can have great impact --
Unless all the characters are doing it. The whole movie. Definitely made some parts feel very, very long. Was appropriate at times because it increased dramatic tension. Other parts, definitely took the viewer out of the movie. Cause, like, wtf. That much silence in any theatre movie is a risk. Why? Cause you are counting on the audience being absolutely quiet for actual minutes. Rarely happens, and noise takes you out of the narrative.
This works in Sicario because... I guess because they aren't all robots. or pretending to be robots. or having crises about what being a robot is. The dramatic pauses aren't part of the characters, but rather the characters reactions to what is taking place around them. and again, usually it is the protagonist experiencing this -- and her tension is being broken/contrasted by two completely different dynamics in Brolin and Del Toro (which is obvious due to the metaphorical purposes, but again, through line cadence.)
30 second pause
"I want to ask you some questions"
6 minute hide and seek scene
2 minute conflict
1 minute resolution
-cut
-new set, next scene
30 second pause
"I want to ask you some questions"
HOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY FUCK.
It's like Leto and Gosling really wanted to let Ford know they were serious actors.Last edited by millenwasmyfavorite; October 9, 2017, 01:22 PM.

I went and seen it today.
Visually it was a great pic and it had an awesome cast. The runtime wasn't an issue for me because the story line was good.
I agree with millen some of the scenes didn't have perfect flow but I liked it a lot.F#*K OHIO!!!

MINOR SPOILER (but hey, it's the last post on this page and it's been a week):
Wonder if anyone else thought of some specific similarities to "Blade Runner: 2049" and ... "The 6th Day." ... lol

Probably just me.
Guilty pleasure: "The 6th Day" is an enjoyable movie. One I watched several times as a youngling.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill
