  • I went and watched the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie today and it was excellent. I always liked the first one but there was a magnificent drop off with the following installments. In all honesty I don't think I've finished watching any of them since the original.

This latest was awesome. Johnny Depp was his one of a kind usual self but the whole movie didn't have to revolve around him. He's obviously the star but he didn't have to carry it. Javier Bardem was sensational. That dude can flat out act.

If you liked the first you'll like this one.

    • Just watched that Netflix original "War Machine". I get the "message" they were going for, but wow it was poorly implemented. I don't know if I need to put SPOILERS, but I'm going to talk about it below.

The narrator, who turns out to be the Rolling Stone magazine writer (not that you find that out until halfway through the movie)...is he supposed to be the good guy?

Are we supposed to sympathize with Brad Pitt's character or not? It feels that way, but then the ending doesn't.

In the one battle scene, is it really believable that some marine would do what the one guy did? Just go off by himself to kill all those insurgents? Seems far fetched.

I didn't really care about any of the characters in the movie at all save for Brad Pitt's character, but that's only because he's there all the time.

I don't know that I expected much, but they still managed to disappoint me.

      • War Machine has an excellent cast but it got terrible reviews. Was it worth watching at all?

        • Finally saw... "Evil Dead II." Wow, such a great and ridiculous movie that develops Bruce Campbell's character into that one liner machine in "Army of Darkness."

          This scene though:

Sam Raimi was a great director until Sony f***ed him over with "Spider-Man 3." Love his style and the camera work he does.

Just like Sam Raimi. His movies recently have been about big budget/ CGI. Back in his early days, Raimi's camera work made him brilliant.
          Though "Spider-man 2" is a great movie.

          • War machine is not very good. Mostly for the reasons pointed above.

Also, playfully tongue in cheek parallel, but non parallel.

It glosses over the biggest question of all: seriously why was there a rolling stone reporter there.

Brad Pitt essentially channels a combination of Will Ferrell's George Dubya and Inglorius Basterds character. It isn't really believable, especially when McChrystal was a badass, completely cavalier -- but aloof wasn't a fault; not to that degree any way.

The director spoke about our current inability to satirize wars, but war machine isn't really satire, just a reinforcement of blunt stigmas already attached and fully realized about our military. Also, he is an Aussie who thinks that because they've stepped on every piece of foreign soil that we have, he somehow gains a seat at the table of countries who have committed too much at almost every opportunity.

This is coming from someone who thinks our level of soldier-hero worship is the death of necessary reverence.

A coworker did and said to wait until it hits Netflix. Not that it was bad but that it seems more suited for TV.

                • I did.

                  Was great.

Disagree with the coworker's assessment, immensely.

It was good enough to question how exactly DC will conduct their shared movies from here on out, because Affleck-Batman will seem like wooden plank compared to Wonder Woman.

I thought it was good but I wouldnt go so far to call it great. It was soooooooo slooooooooooowwww. I was fighting off going to sleep for the longest time.

And while Gal Gadot is amazing eye candy and looked the part she lacked and didnt bring much to the character IMO.

                    • The D.C. Characters are vapid to begin with. The whole franchise is and has suffered through this realization. They caught fire with Nolan and Batman, then hurled themselves towards shared universe -- now we got affleck as batman and a superman who thinks clenching his jaw under dramatic lighting achieves drama. She'll probably be the saving grace at this point.

Wow. Putting it like that sounds like they cant cast worth a f#*k.

Meanwhile Marvel has it down to a science but everything there revolves around Robert Downey Jr. He was perfect for it.

                        • Yea, it sucks.

It sucks because they literally watched an incredible batman franchise unfold.

                          Z. Snyder said his would be better. It isn't.

Concealed his narcissism in "wanting to use different source material".

Nolan's Batman was rooted in realism, ya, but it wouldn't have taken THAT much to start incorporating the more supernatural -- there was plenty of disbelief suspension in his Batman movies.

Any way, not saying this was the solution, but going from Bale to Affleck is pretty grim. Affleck literally pays hookers to tell him he is an actor like Bale. Then he goes and blows his roid loads on Maher.

                          • I seriously don't understand anything you just said besides Affleck for Bale was a terrible trade.

                            and for that I concur

                            • Affleck was much nearer the bottom of the list of things wrong with that movie than the top. Snyder has only one trick and that's to make pounding, ponderous, humorless spectacles that take themselves waaaay to seriously. Throw in overly complicated plots, terrible choices with the Lex Luthor character and dark ear splitting battles and it's just not very enjoyable. It's like a depressed Michael Bay movie.

Most of those characteristics were readily gleaned from any other movie Snyder has done
