Saw the replay again and Ratface was there in perfect position to take a charge if Morris had taken another step forward. Douglass is open on the right wing for a 3 and Hardaway is popping open on the left for a bounce pass or alley-oop but the pull-up also gives Morris a very good look at the rim as Ratface starts to jump towards him to contest the shot.

      • Agree to disagree, no way ratface stays in front of Morris if he gives a quick fake and goes to one side or the other.

like I said ... after reading the definition of exploited .. they were. However, they weren't harmed in any way. They were compensated for their decision to to take part in intercollegiate athletics with a full athletic scholarship and were supposed to live by a set of rules .. namely that they don't get paid and remain 'amateurs' ... and they did not. It's not a hard concept to understand. And it doesn't matter how many t-shirts the school sold with their likeness. It's exactly what the signed up for. A free education and professional develop within their field.

If they wanted to get paid they should have simply went to the professional ranks immediately ... however the aura that UM helped create around them would not have occurred.

                • Nobody went pro immediately in 1991 but I do remember reading a Street & Smiths or SLAM article that said "Chris Webber will be the #1 pick whenever he decides to come out" in an article about the top High School seniors.

That's total horseshit. I doubt anywhere on the letters they signed did they sign their likeness rights over to the university.

Sorry, a scholarship is not a free pass for the school to milk you for every red cent. They don't go to school for that. Scholarships are expensive, but they are not priceless. At some point, the school is making far more money off of them then the scholarships they gave away.

They were wrong to break the NCAA rules, but if those same rules allow universities to exploit these kids at every opportunity, then they aren't rules worth protecting.

                      • When normal students don't have to shell out 70k+ over four years to get a degree, I'll start crying about "exploited" athletes who get it for free.

Until then, those crying "exploitation" can shut up and deal.

                            precisely.

and let me add it's called free will and the FAB 5 willingly and freely (ok, well not freely or the banners would still be hanging) decided to GO TO PLAY college ball and they were well fucking aware of their rights and rules they were supposed to abide by when they made that choice.

It's pretty simple when you think about it. If you don't want the University to make money off you then don't go there or go there and stipulate that they can't sell merchandise with your number/face etc

Otherwise take your skills to the NBA.

Those are the rules. You don't like them? Tough shit.

College athletes are compensated. You don't like how much they are compensated. That's not "exploitation." They get something that most people have to go deep into debt to have.

I'll start crying for them when a doctor fresh out of med school isn't $150k in the red before he even enters the work force. I get that universities use these folks shamelessly... but these athletes are the ones who get the good deal comparatively.

My concern is for the skyrocketing costs of higher education, not the people who get it free of charge.

                              • College Athletes do need some sort of small leveling out stipend though. I mean how goofy is it that selling golden pants for a couple hundred dollars seems like a good idea or could be tempting.
