The Appalachian State loss (if that is who you are referring to) was during Carr's last year as coach.

    • This is beautiful, and a perfect example of what is wrong with sports reporting lately, right from ESPN's front page;

Okay, dipshits... if the university is denying that they have fired Rich Rodriguez, THEN RODRIGUEZ HASN'T BEEN FIRED YET AND YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR HEADLINE!

Then again, what does the University of Michigan know? I mean, they're only his employers. How the fuck would they know if they fired him, right?

      • Um, they could have fired him and are not ready to announce it yet, thereby denying the report.

        • Yup. I have no idea what is goin to happen. But I guess RR is still head coach.
Someone might lose their job at FOX 2 Detroit if RR is back next season lol .

Reports Tuesday indicated that Rich Rodriguez has been fired as Michigan's head coach after three shaky seasons. The university is denying the report.

Michigan officials denied the reports, saying in a statement, "This is media speculation at this point. The definitive voice on this matter is [athletic director] Dave Brandon and he has not and will not speak publicly until a final decision has been made."
Brandon, meanwhile, told ESPN's Desmond Howard that he has not made a decision on the future of Rodriguez. Brandon and Rodriguez met Tuesday afternoon for more than three hours. Michigan postponed Tuesday night's players meeting. Rodriguez traditionally holds the meeting the night before classes resume each semester. Defensive back James Rogers said the meeting was rescheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
Rodriguez's wife, Rita, left the building shortly before 5 p.m. and told reporters she had been told nothing about her husband's job.

          • The point is... lets say you are reporting on an event, and put up a headline saying that the event has happened. Event organizers then tell you that the event hasn't happened yet.

Do you change your headline? Or do you say, "The event has happened! Event organizers are denying the report"?

            • If you know the event happened, you report it as well as the fact that they're denying that it did.

              • This is weird. I don't know how else to put it. If RR was going to be fired then he would have by now... except its nearly impossible the fans will accept RR back... there isn't a logical conclusion right now. I have no idea whats going to happen. Not the slightest clue. Brandon needs to pull something out of his ass here.

                • no, if rich rod was going to be kept, they would have made that clear a month ago before they lost Dee Hart and torpedoed the biggest recruit he ever landed.

                  • Thats what I'm saying.

It makes zero sense what is happening right now.

Is the idea to purposely delay until they have his successor ready to go? Thats all I can figure and even that doesn't make much sense.

                    • Here's the problem Deb. ESPN doesn't know it's happened. They have "reports", the two I know of being the Detroit Free Press and Fox 2 in Detroit. Both sources have since backed off those reports.

ESPN, however, has never let the facts ruin a good headline story. If the university says he is not fired yet (note that the university never said they weren't going to, merely that they haven't yet), then he is not fired. It's pretty fucking simple; and to run a headline that says otherwise is simply poor journalism.

Of course, once he is fired, ESPN will claim they were right all along.
