  • I agree. Let's call it the best team trophy and give it to the best team.

I think thats a great idea. Sincerely. All this discussion around how the national champion is crowned begs the question - who said we need a national champion? Why isn't it enough to win your division and play in a bowl? It was enough for many, many years. What changed?

Not so long ago - before the BCS and the ridiculous money and hype surrounding NCAA football - your team might have won their division and won the big bowl game but got passed over for the national championship (or more accurately judged "best team")because the polls liked some other team more. Who cares? Its just a poll!! Your team achieved its goals and had a fantastic season. Celebrate! It should be enough.

Because at some point roughly 25 years ago, people started making a big fucking deal about those polls. It came to a head in 1997 when Michigan and Nebraska "shared" the "national title", two teams that never even played each other.

Never mind that scenario had occured multiple times before, now it was suddenly unacceptable.

          • Too much money being made off the backs of thesse players (they should get some) for there not to be a legitimate National Champion...if you're going to call it that.

            • I never see people agree on a playoff or they have a response, yea but I would do it this way.

              CBS Sportline:

Seems the NFL playoffs are not so perfect! The possibility of a team winning a division with a losing record has led to calls for a playoff format change. At 5-9, the San Francisco 49ers are alive, fresh off their 34-7 thumping by the San Diego Chargers last Thursday night.

Can you imagine the uproar if 12-4 New Orleans has to go to Seattle to face the 7-9 Seahawks, a team they blew out earlier this season? Again wake me when the playoffs start like every other pro sport (yes NHL too). Lets not go this way with college football, that's why its the best. College BB is only exciting for 2 weeks and they will be expanding the tournament again soon.

While we're at it, why do we even keep score? Why do we need a winner and a loser? Why isn't it enough for everyone to simply play hard and give your best? For a long time, it wasn't about winning or losing, it was how you played the game. What changed?

You think that would take 20 minutes? I coulda done that shit in less than 5.

It's been unacceptable since way before '97. I remember being befuddled by that in the 70s as a kid.

Everyone should get a trophy at the end of the year.

Games have never been about more than winning or losing. That's assinine. Personally I'm with Lightnin and Wings. The idea of a playoff holds little to no appeal to me.

                      • I'm interested in competition to see who the best is, but then again, I'm a guy. The appeal of sending everyone home with a trophy and orange slices ended when I hit puberty.

                        • Jim Harbaugh's brother thinks he wants to stay at Stanford

John Harbaugh, coach of the Baltimore Ravens, told nationalfootballpost.com.

I think he wants to stay at Stanford, I think he’d love to stay there, but then again, you just have to see what happens. He’s not the kind of guy that’s going to make any kind of commitment until he’s ready to make a commitment. I think his commitment right now is having a baby and winning the Orange Bowl. ”

And that's exactly what the playoffs are about. Middle aged, overweight guys using college boys to satiate their competitive urges.

                              • That's ridiculous LB. Why is there some underlying psychological link that only applies to college football? Truth is, in the vast majority of other sports, in any other contest in general, there is a multi-team playoff tourney, and the winner is decided by direct competition. That is the norm. DivI college football is the aberation.
