      • Source: Michigan OK with NCAA results

        By Joe Schad

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The NCAA has concluded that Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez did not fail to promote an atmosphere of compliance, a previous allegation that the school challenged, a source close to the situation said Wednesday night.

The NCAA will reveal its finding as early as Thursday, the source said. The NCAA will also announce if Michigan's self-imposed penalties for admitted excessive football-related hours and excessive coaches were acceptable.

While the source did not reveal specifics of those findings, the person said the results were "positive news for Michigan football."

The NCAA accused Michigan of five major rules violations related to exceeding practice and workout time in the wake of a Detroit Free Press report last year. The report led to investigations by both the school and the NCAA.

The school accepted responsibility for four of the allegations, but Michigan vigorously challenged a charge that coach Rich Rodriguez failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance with NCAA rules during an August hearing in Seattle.

Michigan announced in May that its self-imposed sanctions included probation for two years and reducing training time by 130 hours over two years -- doubling the amount of time the Wolverines exceeded NCAA rules.

The school also reprimanded seven people, including Rodriguez.

        • Looks like those MAJOR violations will result in a lap on the wrist. The whole thing was an agenda driven joke from day one.

                  • The discrepancies between the Rosenberg/Snyder allegations and the truth are huge. That's indefensible. Rodriguez has lost some stature for his record, but the Freep has lost credibility for printing an imbalanced hit piece. They will no doubt spin the story, but an unbiased third party that was tasked with investigating the allegations disagrees. It's not as though the NCAA was afraid to pull the trigger. They took 30 scholarships from USC - a truly rogue program.

They cut two team personnel, reduced practice hours, issues letters of reprimand and placed themselves on two years' probation, which means they'll have to report regularly to the NCAA like they were juvenile deliquents checking with a truant officer. The NCAA will reportedly extend that to three years. You're saying because it's not the SMU death penalty, it's a "joke"? I don't think it's very funny, and Rodriguez will be reprising the lead in Il Pagliacci at the end of the season.

                      • If it was an imbalanced hit piece, Michigan would have found nothing in their investigation and neither would the NCAA. Rodriguez broke rules, the Free Press reported it and they have been handed NCAA penalties.

You label it a hit piece because it affected your program, but it wasn't a hit piece. I think truly what you are mad about is that the Free Press didn't look the other way like the Blue Wall is supposed to.

Maybe they can get some tips from MSU! ;)

                          • The very minor penalties do not match the hyped up allegations and hysteria that were perpetuated by so-called friends and enemies. What was found amounted to little, thus the slap on the wrist. If the NCAA had found anything truly criminal they would have taken away scholarships. Much ado about nothing. I don't want the Freep to look the other way, but I don't want them to distort the truth either. Rodriguez was not found guilty of the most grievous charge. That's what his detractors can't handle. Personally, I think he should be shown the door at the end of the season. But not for a few extra hours of practice/stretching.

You truly believe those are stiff penalties? They effect nothing. I know this is a very disappointing day for you, but David Brandon has supported Rodriguez all along on this issue. He might let RR go due to the win-loss record, but I'm thinking he won't. Money owed Rodriguez is something to consider.

I am a bigger UM fan than you are, Rocky. I went there and went to games while there. I bleed maize and blue, and my blood is all over the carpet for this. Rich Rodriguez needs to pay for dragging our asses through the mud. Back to the Appalachians with him.
