Gotta disagree here. If you had a playoff game (while keeping the bowl system alive) you would see more meaning in some of these lesser bowls.
A sixteen team playoff means 15 games (or "playoff bowls.')
Look at the attendance of these bowl games and tell me it wouldn't make a difference.I certainly would love to see my team advance and not just say wow we are the "Meineke Car Care Champions!." and go home!

I think people like thinking you can keep the bowl system intact while making some playoff, but I doubt you can do it to the extent Dan has proposed. There are a lot of interests in keeping the bowl system and they aren't going away. The best you can do without eliminating the bowl system entirely is some sort of plus 1 game.

DanV posts the attendance numbers and thats not what drives the ship. The TV dollars spread out over 35 games drives. Pus DanV follows the Buckeyes, they will compete for national titles under any arrangement. Far more people follows teams like the Spartans and Chippewas, who find it being a successful season being a Meinecke Car Champ.
The Spartans have an extremely slim hope of ever winning a national title. But that hope is much bigger under this arrangement than this super conference/playoff scenario floating around.

Agree.
A lot of people discount how important the lesser bowls are to the cities that host them as well as the teams that play in them.Last edited by CGVT; June 11, 2010, 09:57 PM.I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on

The Spartans can be ranked 10, qualify, get on a hot streak, and win it all in a playoff system. The Spartan ranked 10 in today's world can win their bowl game and go home ranked 9th overall. If they're happy with that than so be it.
Personally, I'm done with a computer's version of #1 vs. its version of #2. It's absolutely stupid.------------

I couldn't care less what college football does in its postseason.
Just don't call the contrived winner of a computer cruncher the national champion.Last edited by chemiclord; June 11, 2010, 08:48 PM.

Since they started in 1998 I think they (BCS) have got it about right - the #1 team vs the #2 team - Playoffs work out the same way sometimes they don't. People just don't see it as closure and im not saying another word about it CL

It would be interesting if several USC players (juniors & seniors) left together as a "package deal" to another College team.
Considering that they can't play in a bowl game AND that they have a new coach, its likely several players will transfer from USC.
I have not heard any predictions, but I think Washington might be a good fit for those players because of connections to Steve Sarkisian.
... & if that did happen, with Jake Locker @ QB... Watch out for Washington...AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

Mike Garrett literally dared the NCAA to do it. He really thought he could act like a dick, not cooperate, and the NCAA would just sulk away. He could have made himself and his department culpable, he could have imposed sanctions internally and avoided much of this, but he thought USC was untouchable.
Now you have a program under Lane Kiffin at the wheel. Who’s the worst possible person to have coaching your team who is under immense scrutiny by the NCAA. Kiffin’s the first on my list.

I KNOW the Associated Press disagrees with you.
Think on this... one national champion (Florida) would have had no opportunity to even play for the championship had human pollsters been absolutely hellbent on preventing a "rematch" of Michigan/OSU. And even then they needed USC to lose before that scenario could emerge.
The biggest issue with the BCS is that if you're not ranked in the Top 15 in the pre-season polls... you basically have 0% chance to play for the Championship... you are for all intents and purposes eliminated from contention before your team takes the first snap of the season.
The BCS (despite not posting any results until Week 6) is completely dependent on pollsters and computer polls that do post before that, and whose polls are largely set by how they feel the teams look before even the first week is in the books.
There is simply no way of knowing what team is #1 and #2 with the sort of huge sample that is available in college football. There's no way of knowing what team is the best unless it is settled on the field.
Personally, I don't care if the bowl system stays or if it goes. But if the current system stays, don't you dare try and sell me the nonsense that the team that wins the BCS championship is the "national champion." There's no way to know that with the system as is.
(For what it's worth, the BCS itself has done that. You may note in official advertisements and BCS authorized ads and statements that they have dropped the "National" part from their title. The team that wins is no longer the BCS National Champion... simply the BCS Champion. That... suits me fine.)
