  • LOS ANGELES -- Two media outlets are reporting the NCAA has decided to ban USC's football team from the postseason for two years and strip the program of scholarships.

The Los Angeles Times reported the NCAA sanctions include the loss of more than 20 scholarships. According to a story posted on ESPN.com on Wednesday night, the Trojans also will forfeit wins "from at least the 2004 season."

The penalties stem from the NCAA's investigation of allegations of improper benefits for Heisman Trophy-winning running back Reggie Bush during his time at the school.

Southern California announced in January that it had imposed sanctions on the basketball team for recruiting violations involving O.J. Mayo, including a ban on postseason play last season.

Harsh penalties against Trojans sign of how serious violations were

This much we know from the NCAA's sanctions of the USC football program: There must be some serious evidence for a two-year postseason ban and a loss of scholarships.

The last time we saw something this harsh from the NCAA, an Alabama booster was throwing a couple hundred thousand at a recruit. That means USC either knew or should have known -- a term the NCAA loves to use – that former star tailback Reggie Bush was taking money from would-be agents.

Biggest winner: UCLA. Watch how fast the Bruins catch the Trojans recruiting Los Angeles.

Biggest loser: USC coach Lane Kiffin. Think Trojans fans will care about scholarship cuts if the Trojans start losing?

        • Wow. That's surprising.

I figured this thread was about Demar Dorsey being denied admission, and re-opening his recruitment.

            • It's a tough situation. First, Dorsey was in trouble with the law quite often in his adolescence, and you want the very best of character for your college football program. But how many times has the thug been admitted, and once focussed on football, was able to turn his life around? You know it's happened at UM, MSU, USC, Florida...wherever. The people that have it in them to get to the top of football whether at the college level or the NFL level come from all walks. Those walks often start on the hard streets. Of course the last thing you want is to admit him and then have him get into all sorts of trouble, with the media asking how could UM let this happen.

              • I agree with all that Drew, but this decision should have been made before he signed the LOI. No need to throw richrod and the kid to the wolves for no reason. Revoking the LOI lke this is bush league.

                    • Brandon denies it, but it seems too coincidental. Funny how there was no uproar when Dorsey was considered a Florida commit. Only when he signed with Michigan did this become an issue. I hear jaadam4's boy Les Miles is interested in DD. How surprising! The SEC's standard is no standards.

                      • Nebraska from a name/tradition standpoint is huge. Nebraska from a current program status? Meh, their football program is still clawing their way back and their basketball sucks. Per SI they will also be the lowest rated academic school in the Big Ten, so not a huge boost their either.

What happened to Pitt? I thought they were one of the early favorites? Good athletic programs, natural geographic rivalry with Penn State, etc. Now, the don't get mentioned anywhere.

That's funny to read. I'm a WVU fan. And I hate him too! although he did have a good thing going with Pat White & Steve Slaton. If he would have stayed in West Virginia another year he could have gotten a title. But, yeah FIRE RICH ROD!!!

                          • I think Nebraska & Missouri are OK choices for Big Ten expansion.
Nebraska will be a Top-15 Football team next year & will be good long term.
                            Mizzu is good at basketball.

Getting Notre Dame is a must for the Big Ten.
                            Geographically, it makes sense.
In Indiana. IU, Purdue, & Notre Dame fans are equally divided.
I would also like to see the Big Ten get:
                            Pittsburgh
                            Kansas
                            Louisville
                            West Virginia
                            Syracuse
                            or UConn
