  • Thanks to cheap beer and some questionable meat on a stick, I was powdering my nose during the last 10 seconds of that game. I am talking a vertical fetal position tooth grinding nose powdering. Came back in time to see the hip breaking celebration.

The parallel is that the Wolvies should have known better than to eat the meat on a stick. The Sparties forced the issue by giving the Wolvies a cheap beer to wash it down.

Either way, the result was equally excruciating and satisfying and lighting a match will not erase the memory for about a year.

At least this fan base got to see a real football game for a change.
Where are we going; and what's up with this hand basket?

    • There was no rule saying you couldn't tackle him.

      • The Sparty who scored dislocated his hip and a fan in the stands had a heart attack. A lot of pain was felt last night.

        • I think punting is the right choice there, the damn punter just has to know you at least fall on the ball in that situation. His fucking stupid roundhouse kick or whatever that was, was just a terrible decision. Get that kid a Fosters!

          • Sure ... that last play was luck, but don't say that's the only reason MSU won. UM had their share of luck as well. The phantom TD? Kings dropping 2 passes that would have been game changers? Is the punter dropping the ball any different than the receiver dropping the ball?

State had 150+ more yards of offense
State had 20 first downs to UM 10
State held UM to a meager 62 rushing yards for the game

All of that while missing nearly 50% of their starters.

            • Punting introduces way more variables that can blow up in your face with just 10 seconds left. Michigan already had the field position it needed to salt the game away, and the clock whittled down to the point they force Sparty's hand. Only thing you gain with a punt is field position you don't need, at the expense of adding in about 4 things that can blow up in your face on a punt.

              1) Giving Sparty unnecessary field position even if the punter recovers a blunder
              2) Fumbling it away for a either a recovery that puts them in scoring position or a return for TD
              3) Getting it blocked, which again either puts them in scoring position or risks getting it returned for a TD
              4) Botching the return coverage and getting the punt returned for a TD - putting the ball into the hands of one of their best skill position players is idiotic in an end-game scenario.

King, I'm not seeing how putting all those factors into play is the right choice. With 30 seconds to go, yeah. With 10 seconds, and half of that will be wasted running a 4th down play - nah. Too much risk for no real reward at that point.

In the scenarios you espouse, the Spartans still have a chance, if very small. With one routine punt play, they have no chance, especially as the Spartans had NO ONE back to field the punt. You have to believe your team can run routine plays.

                • But running a play has many variables as well...fumbled snap fumbled handoff, fumble on carry. All returnable. All leading to good field position. Even just a stop gives good field position.

                  • really, this is a Lions forum, just pick any gamethread and read a little while and you will discover there is no truly safe play that could have been run, because the Lions have proven to you that it could be fucked up every conceivable way............
                    The only logical explanation is:
I'm about to die and this is my Jacob's Ladder

Whereas the saying, don't let the officials affect the game by taking it out of their hands, so is, don't let one play cost you the game.

The whole goal of the game is to win, whatever you're supposed to do to make it happen.

                      • It is a different scenario for a punt there. Every other time you punt there is a realistic expectation that the team is going to try and block it but generally you aren't going to get hit. When you are sending ten men, the punter is going to get hit and he knows it. It puts a lot of pressure on the chap.

                        • Punter should not be hit unless it gets blocked...

                          • it was 4th down and 10 seconds is a very long time to run around and try to milk the clock. I thought the punt was fine, but they obviously didn't execute it. The punter should know to at least fall on the ball. Once it's on the ground, it's tough for MSU to take it anywhere. He tried that ninja kick shit or whatever and left it hanging in the air.

Not on a 10 man blitz, he's getting hit.
