Just because MSU got left out doesn't mean Michigan or Alabama fans don't want a playoff.
I don't think you really want a playoff. You like to say it but there's no action. Hell the closest time they actually got much movement was in 2006. We supplied all the quotes. Florida was going to lauch an investigation(which quickly forgot about). The SEC got its bottle and and shut up. Everyone is so lazy about, I haven't even seen any articles bringing up these quotes. Its like it never happened.

The question remains, why would anyone ever think that Alabama or Michigan would ever want a playoff given how much they benefit from the current system? I have much more respect for Wingdog's Long Live the BCS opinion. He's being true to himself.

    • What is there for a fan to do?

Not watch any of the bowl games but your own team's? That's kind of what I did last year, which was painful.

The scheduling talk is more of a indictment of college football in general. an 11-1 team like Alabama nowadays is not like an 11-1 team of 30 years ago. I use Michigan as an example because they were proud of playing anyone, anywhere. Now thats just not the case. Trust me I know about that Alabama game, they've been talking about here for 3 years. Back in the day it wouldn't be such a big deal, because you scheduled those type of games all the time.

It may never do that, no matter how many times you wear Baylor's colors.

I will say this, I'm not going to argue that Michigan had a better season than spartie. They just made it close by winning their last 3 games, including blowing out Nebraska and then beating their top rival, while spartie played a couple of under the radar games and then lost their final game. When things are close, the decision makers are going to go with the more attractive draw. Michigan also had a higher BCS ranking.

Is it fair? No. Is it reality? At this point, yes.

So, spartie loses a few dollars because they made a dumb play at the end of their game. They still get to play in a very solid bowl game against a pretty good "Name" opponent. That's not too shabby.

I would've been fine with Michigan playing Georgia.
I think you're missing the point. I have no problems with MSU going to the Outback bowl. There is nothing that says the Big Ten deserved a 2nd bowl. In some respects they didn't deserve a second team, they were the 4th rated conference. To me it was Rose Bowl or bust, and they busted.

What I'm saying is, if you're OK with how Alabama and Michigan got these bids, then you are OK with the BCS and you're not really for a playoff. So quit talking about a playoff.

          • It's also become an issue of money.

I haven't heard of Michigan turning anyone down but I think they do try to keep as many home dates as possible, to make as much $$$$ as they can.

Somehow, in the past they got teams like Florida State & Miami to come up north. I guess those teams are protecting their dollars as well.

I don't make the same connection with these two things. Again, what am I supposed to do to make a playoff happen?

              • Write the U of M athletic department telling them you want to scrap the curent system for a playoff.

I'm sure you don't make the same connection. You're making arguments why they got the bid.

                    • Michigan had a great year. Their fans should be happy. They should be able to handle VT quite handily as well.

Is beating VT in the sugar bowl more impressive than beating other teams in "lessor" bowls just because it's the sugar bowl?

I think it's kinda clear that if it isn't the rose bowl (symbolic big ten winner game) or for the NCAA championship there really isn't that much difference if you facing another top 25 team.

Its taking awhile but maybe you are starting to get it. If you actually want a playoff system you have to argue playoffs or nothing. If you buy the shirts and hats and go to games and watch the bowl games on TV, you are always going to have the BCS. When you argue why these teams got bids and use their ratings and tickets sold as valid reasons, you are arguing for the BCS. A playoff system will only come about when people stop watching and attending the games. Just drop the pretense of saying you want a playoff system, its a statement that means nothing.

Nobody said you can't be happy for Michigan and Alabama. You should be estatic, you root for two teams that have established preferential treatment. If there is any question, you are going to get the benefit of the doubt. Thats a great thing for you guys!!! If anything you should be effusive in praise of the BCS, just like Wingdog. He gets it.

                        • So, Sparty sour grapes it is, then.

Demanding that fans whose teams that are in BCS bowls not buy the shirts and hats and go to games and watch the bowl games on TV is ridiculous.

You would have Americans who don't agree with the party that controls government stop paying taxes too?

                            • Its not sour grapes, its the truth. In what scenario do you see a playoff system come around? Here's the answer, when people stop paying attention and paying money. Thats the only real scenario where this transformation takes place.

Demanding that fans whose teams that are in BCS bowls not buy the shirts and hats and go to games and watch the bowl games on TV is ridiculous.

I'm not demanding anything. You guys are having reading comprehension issues. I'm saying you should drop fake, phony " Can't we all agree there should be a playoff?" statement. Because you don't really mean it and you shouldn't. As a Michigan and Alabama fan you are getting extra benefits, its good to be you!!! Acknowledge your good fortune!!!!

It has nothing to do with MSU being left out. They are ranked 17th, they have three losses. There has never been a time in college football in which that resume would get an at large berth in the Sugar Bowl. Yeah it stinks that Michigan is going and MSU is the much better team, but that bowl game is about where you should expect a 17th ranked team with three losses.

But you won't hear me arguing for a playoff. In fact you've never read me in here arguing for a playoff system. Whats uncomfortable for you is I'm acknowledging the elephant in the room that you don't want to acknowledge. The BCS is great for you, you don't want it to go anywhere. Why would you?

I agree, a fan boycott isn't going to work. It has to be organic, where people get so fed up with the BCS that they just quit watching the game altogether. Kind of like NBT saying college football is dead to him. If people actually followed through on that kind of stuff and attendance and ratings went down, you might get a change. But as it is now, you guys are endorsing the BCS, but its entirely possible that you don't realize it.
