  • I always get a kick out of these people who are so rabidly pro-playoff. Always convincing themselves that the latest travesty will be the end of the BCS and what is needed to spur on a playoff. Every year that goes by a playoff looks less likely.

The big football facotries have gotten it down to the point where they get to play 7-8 home games with 3 mandatory cupcakes. Now they all do it. You don't have to win your division and you can get to a BCS game. This thing is getting more entrenched, not less entrenched.

30 years Michigan rarely ventured out of a BCS opponent for a non-conference game. The regular season ain't what it used to be.

        • There are enough good games before the conference, though I do wish there were more all around the college landscape. Michigan/Notre Dame, Michigan State/Notre Dame. Im already looking forward to Michigan State vs Boise.

          • There is a lot less than you think. Just go back and look at Michigan's schedule 30 years ago.

How is the regular season relavent?

Christ, you can not even play for your conference championship and still play for NC.

College football is approaching NBA territory.

                • Chip on the shoulder for what? I'm just pointing out what needs to be pointed out. When you are benefitting from this system, you are pretty always going to be for this system. You actually don't really want a playoff if you are rationalizing why Alabama and Michigan got BCS births when they couldn't even get to a conference championship game.

You know I am right about this, it might be painful deep down to admit. And your defense mechanism is that I have a chip on my shoulder and that allows you to avoid the real question: Under this sweetheart deal, why would Alabama and Michigan ever argue for a playoff? The simple answer is they wouldn't. Instead of being fake and saying, Can we all just agree there should be a playoff? , just say "Long Live the BCS!"

In 1981, MIchigan played two out of conference games. (regular season). Notre Dame and Navy. Both at home.

The regular season is super relevant, look at how many teams had a chance to be playing against LSU after they beat Alabama only to lose games, Oregon, Oklahoma St, Stanford, VA Tech, etc etc etc COULD be in that game if they didn't blow it in the regular season.

You don't think fans can appreciate the team you root for is in a good bowl this season while still wishing there were a playoff?

Just because MSU got left out doesn't mean Michigan or Alabama fans don't want a playoff.

1981 was an anomaly, one of those other games against a Big Ten opponent was a nonconference game. They played 9 games against Big Ten opponents and had a 6-2 record. I'm not sure what game it is. Then the next 3 years the Big Ten played the full round robin 9 game schedule. That was back when the Big Ten teams played anyone and anywhere and the likes of Nebraska were ridiculed when they played University of Pacific. Nowadays, they all schedule these schools and they rarely go on the road.

                            • As far as spartie traveling well (which maybe they do, maybe they don't), there's still a thing called a TV and something called ratings. spartie football doesn't yet bring ratings the way Michigan does.
It may never do that, no matter how many times you wear Baylor's colors.

I will say this, I'm not going to argue that Michigan had a better season than spartie. They just made it close by winning their last 3 games, including blowing out Nebraska and then beating their top rival, while spartie played a couple of under the radar games and then lost their final game. When things are close, the decision makers are going to go with the more attractive draw. Michigan also had a higher BCS ranking.

Is it fair? No. Is it reality? At this point, yes.

So, spartie loses a few dollars because they made a dumb play at the end of their game. They still get to play in a very solid bowl game against a pretty good "Name" opponent. That's not too shabby.

I would've been fine with Michigan playing Georgia.

Next year, you'll be happy. Michigan plays Bammy down south and at Notre Dame.
