  • Morris got a good shot to tie the game. It didn't go in. Parsing what he could have done is hindsight.

Can't blame Morris at all for taking the shot that was there in front of him.

    • Which is why I already said it. Twice.

      • I don't fault the shot. I just wish he were a better shooter.

Long storfy....I'll try to be brief....when i lived in north carolina, my house was midway between unc and duke campus. My next door neighbor worked at duke and took me to a lot of games....i loved the enthusiasm and the team. at the same time, my wife worked at unc...so when i went to the games there i'd get worked up all over again. I loved Dean Smith when he was coaching, and what's not to like about coach K.
But it could be that I am a fan of the fans, more than the teams. After all, when they lose, i don't go to bed sobbing like I have done after a lions loss.
But I do remember the loudest I ever cheered was the final seconds of this Duke game. The greatest finish I have ever seen.

          • “The players themselves, I don’t think caused us any harm at all,” Duderstadt said of the Fab Five. “I don’t think it was a good idea to pull down the NCAA banners or try to hide the seasons. I view them as a positive part of the University’s history.”

            • ^ what a dufuss. I can understand a fan hanging onto and enjoying the memories, but the University is correct in forfeiting the banners and records ... also, the argument that the kids were generating revenue for the school and didn't get any renumeration is complete BS. They were getting their highly valued scholarship ... also, the majority of people who work for a business never get a extra renumeration for an idea or something that generates extra revenue for their company.

Ok, first off, being a student athlete often comes with the privilege of a scholarship. That's understood. But when the University starts selling your jersey number and printing T-shirts with your likeness to make an extra buck, then you've crossed the line. When your student athletes start generating revenue outside of simply performing in athletic competition, then you've begun to exploit them. Period.

Also, if you didn't notice, people whose ideas get taken from them by the companies they work for, still get paychecks. Comparing the fab 5 to a corporate group just proves the point.

College programs should be forbidden from selling jerseys with a current player's number, or printing anything relating to a specific player or group of players, without proper compensation.

                  • exploited? seriously? I disagree.

As individuals do you think they could have gone out and generated revenue?
As a group of five guys could they have gone out and generated market share?

I don't think so. Part of the reason they were a marketable entity was because they were part of the University of Michigan.

                    • Yes. When the university is making money off of you outside the realm of people buying tickets to watch you play, that's exploitation.

Chris Webber and Jalen Rose and Juwan Howard generated plenty of revenue in the NBA. The notion that the only reason they were famous is because of Michigan is stupid as hell.

Chris Webber could have sold his high school jersey and made money off of it. He was famous before he ever stepped foot in Michigan.

                        • Ya know what really irritates me?

Watching coaches like Calipari and Fischer coaching other teams and having taken no long term punishment at all, despite being central figures in terrible violations of NCAA rules and leaving the teams they led hanging.

I personally feel those two have no right to be coaching at any level at this point.

then that's what he should have done ... instead he chose to participate in basketball, in amateur athletics, as part of University affiliated with the NCAA and rules for such things as making money are laid out. It was his choice to be a part of that and he should have followed the rules in doing so. And he did it willingly, by the way. There were also benefits afforded him by doing so, not the least of which was professional training and education which would further enhance his earnings potential.

as a side not: The word 'exploit' had a negative connatation in my head which doesn't exist in it's actual definition. So I was wrong in choosing that word. Yes, they were 'exploited'. They were used by the university for profit, but it wasn't detrimental to them, nor did the University take unfair advantage of them.

now if you use this definition for exploit, then NO they were not.

                            2. to take advantage of (a person, situation, etc), esp unethically or unjustly for one's own ends

Coach Knight has had some pointed (and funny) comments over the years regarding both those situations.
Rashean Mathis: "I'm an egg guy. Last year we didn't have (the omelet station). I didn't complain, but I was dying inside."

                              • I don't blame the fab 5 kids for taking the money. Uncle Ed approached these guys at a young age and he already had inroads with other kids usually and could mount way more peer pressure than teenagers can typically deal with. I likely would have taken the money too if I had the talent those kids had at that age in that environment. The unfortunate part is I don't think the fab 5 realized everyone who's at fault for these demons that have haunted them and placed their venom in the right spots. They were taken advantage of and it has cost them and they did nothing most teenagers wouldn't do.

That said Michigan should never hang those banners. But I got no problem with honoring former players, even ones who took monkey, in other ways.
