    • Three; they went from one play in to four. Because of that, I think at least five Big Ten teams get in. But if Michigan beats MSU only to get knocked off early in the tourney, they'll be more likely to take someone else; everybody from the Big Ten who's on the bubble is going to be like 9-9 conference, and 20-13 overall including the tourney,. There'll be about four teams like that.

      • The two teams in front of U-M are PSU and MSU. If they win their last game, they will have swept both of the teams in front of them. That's a pretty powerful message if we're debating big 10 teams.

        • It is, but assuming they win their first round tourney game, they would likely be playing one of those teams as the 4 or 5 seed. Ipso facto, if they lose their second round game they will no longer have swept them. They gotta win two in the tourney. And beat MSU.

Recalculating, as Mayhem would say...that's obviously not correct. I'm not used to the idea of Michigan possibly finishing the season fourth or fifth; they would get a first round bye. I don't think they've finished this high since the conference started the tournament.

            • Already considered by many to be the greatest Michigan basketball player ever, Cazzie Russell is headed to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

Russell, who was a three-time All-America, led U-M to three Big Ten titles and Final Fours in 1964 and 1965, was announced today as part of the 2011 class, which will be introduced at the Final Four in Houston and inducted next fall in Kansas City.

He is joined by Virginia’s Ralph Sampson, North Carolina’s James Worthy and St. John’s Chris Mullin, coaches Bob Knight (Army, Indiana, Texas Tech) and Eddie Sutton (Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma State) and contributors Joe Vancisin and Eddie Einhorn.

“I’m completely grateful to God for the gifts that he gave me to play and thank everybody on the committee that elected me to be inducted to the Hall of Fame,” Russell said in a teleconference today. “It’s a great honor. It’s wonderful to be able to share this with a lot of former teammates and also this great class to come in with. I recognize a lot of the coaches there -- coach Sutton, coach Knight -- I recognize a lot of the players who were after I was, but I had a chance to see them play. I’m very grateful for this honor. It’s really a blessing. I had a lot of fun playing the game, and I surely hope the people that had a chance to watch me play enjoyed watching me play.

"Thank you so much for this honor, and I’m really looking forward to being there in the Final Four."

                      • Joe Lunardi has Michigan in the NCAA Tourney right now ...

"Illinois is in ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi’s NCAA tournament field… at least for now.

Lunardi placed the Illini as a No. 10 seed in the East region in his latest bracket on Monday. He has Illinois facing No. 7-seed Cincinnati in the first round with a possible second-round matchup against the winner of No. 2 Duke and No. 15 Long Island.

Illinois was one of six Big Ten teams in Lunardi’s bracket. Ohio State (No. 1 seed), Purdue (No. 2), Wisconsin (No. 3), Michigan State (No. 10) and Michigan (No. 12) were also selected.

Illinois (18-11, 8-8) travels to No. 6 Purdue (24-5, 13-3) in a key Big Ten game on Tuesday. The Illini close out their conference schedule with Indiana in Champaign on Saturday."

                        • They need to win two of their next three. A snapshot clinches nothing if your remaining games are against other bubble teams.

                          • They have to beat MSU. Nobody's debating that.

It serves the double-purpose of brightening U-M's resume and knocking MSU beneath them in the bracket conversation.

I can't imagine they'd leave Michigan out if they finished 4th or 5th in the conference.

                            • If they can't beat a struggling MSU team at home maybe they aren't ready for the tourney.

Ready, schmeady. I wanna see my team in the Dance. I don't care if they get hammered by 50 points. Just making it is the thing.
