I think part of Froot's point is that, even the "hot" name assistants (Billick, Lewis, etc.) are part of the usual NFL process, they don't get outrageous contracts usually, because they haven't succeeded before. It's the guys with prior success, either NFL or NCAA, that are wooed away from other jobs or from the sidelines with these mega-packages that ultimately, for the most part, haven't paid off.
Well, like I said, define "paid off." If the owner made more money than he would have otherwise due to renewed interest in the team, he may cover the cost of the big contract. They all want to win, but most of them if given the choice would prefer making money to winning.
Even if you are a great coach, you are limited in your chances at a pro job. He can do everything in his power to win but if the franchise is weak and doesn't have strong organizational types, then he won't succeed.
You're right about the franchise needing to be good from top to bottom. Look at the Bengals and Lions to see the need for strong leadership. Harbaugh could be at Michigan for 15 years and own Ann Arbor. If the Dolphins' owner makes JH one of the highest paid coaches in the NFL because he won an Orange Bowl he is crazy. I see Harbaugh as a college coach, myself. Wasn't Sparano handpicked by Bill Parcells?

I'll let you ban hate speech when you let me define hate speech.

Well, a lot of this interpretation is post hoc. A team can stink and stink and stink and stink and suddenly win something, and everybody's talking about how well run they are. There was no team as inept as Arizona, and they got to the Super Bowl, The Niners never won anything until the string of titles; same with Pittsburgh. Sometimes the building from within isn't noticed because the team stays a loser until it reaches critical mass. Miami has at least had recent success and may feel a coach who can win 12 games at Stanford is all they need to put them over the top.
I'm starting to really get why everyone hates UM fans.
None of you think there's any chance that harbaugh just doesn't want to coach here? It has to be the Management's fault, or Lloyd Carr's fault? Maybe he would just rather coach at the next level and there is no conspiracy about it.
We aren't that great of a job anymore, tbh. Miles or maybe Patterson are about the only guys that will keep me from calling this a complete failure by Dave Brandon and the people around him. Brady Hoke is not someone worth blowing up an offense and a recruiting class over.

You're entitled to your rant. I don't think any one particular coach is magickal. Come back to this post in a couple of years and we'll discuss it further.

I have no doubt Harbaugh doesn't want to coach at Michigan... partially because of the nonsense that goes on in Ann Arbor.

I hope you are completely correct, and we've returned to where we were. Just worried about the likelyhood, really.
