  • RichRod was a hot HC back then and I thought it was a homerun catch (like many others). Remember he turned down Alabama the year before. I have supported him for the most part, but not really sure if he will ever be successfully at Michigan now. 3 years I think is enough to have a average defense in Ann Arbor. Have to stick with him now - yes Jim Harbaugh sounds great, I think hes going to the NFL though.

    • As a state fan I hope they keep DickRod for reasons beyond the obvious 3 year winning streak.

Because of the type of player DickRod wants to make his gimmiky spread offense run, he leaves a lot of great players on the table that State would normally lose out to in the recruiting wars.

If you are QB with the hope of playing that position in the NFL would you want to be cutting your teeth in that spread or a more traditional NFL style attack.

Same holds true for TE's, WR's .. even offensive lineman.

Since DickRod took over at West Virginia they've had exactly 2 OL selected in the NFL draft. That's right, 2. U-M had three in a single draft iirc. They've only had 14 players selected in 10 years (2001 - 2011). Two of which were Chris Henry and PacMan Jones by the way. U-M in that same period? 43.

That's a LOT of talented football players that MSU can leverage becuase of they way Dick develops ... or should we doesn't develop. It's just a simple question .. which programs better suits your opportunity to go pro?

How many Big Ten teams are going to hand Les Miles wins?

Les Miles is very very average with the luck of the fucking devil. Eventually, teams are going to stop handing him wins. No to Miles. God no to Miles.

                • He has more talent than anyone else. LSU should never lose a game. They win in spite of Miles, not because of him.

                  • I'm still trying to figure out the coaching scheme that relies on opponents having 13 men on the field to end a game as a viable winning strategy.

The talent pool at WVU wasn't exactly rich in talent.

I will say I have not been impressed with Rich's ability to develop players though.

                        • lol Fruit ...

Fact is both programs CAN be successful at the same time with DickRod plucking quick little midgets from around the country and leaving the meat and potatoes guys for the Spartans. It would be much harder for State if U-M was running a more traditional power based offense. In fact, didn't one of the best college coaches in the country (not my favorite guy though) left State, specifically because he couldn't compete against U-M to get players?

Well in the previous 10 year period under Nehlen they managed to get 28 + players drafted and even a successful QB (Marc Bulger).

You won't see any DickRod qb's on Sundays. A uber talented guy like Denard Robinson will be on the field somewhere obviously, but not likely at QB.

By the way ... a succesful program isn't measured by the number of players who play on Sundays and it's not DickRod's job to fill out NFL rosters, it's his job to win games at Michigan.

I'm just pointing out that ... in my opinion ... his success or lack thereof is a benefit to State because of the style and system he chooses to run.

Defense is defense though. And State has gotten some good kids from michigan lately on the defensive side that one could argue would have been more likely to go to UofM in the past.

                              • Great point. i don't know that any teams using a spread offense will succeed in the college ranks!

I encourage MSU to use likelihood of going pro to recruit. State has had 2 players drafted in the past two years. Michigan has had 5.

In the sainted ones time at Cincinati, he had 5 players drafted. Even less than the 14 Rich got drafted.

Dantonio is a good coach. He has a well disciplined team that executes well. He seems to have returned MSU to respectability. But let's PLEASE not pretend he is something he is not.
