  • Oh, and didn't Dr Tom retire that year?

    • A lot of Michigan fans haven't forget 1997... and hate Tom Osborne now that 'N' is in the Big Ten. Unreal, I really didn't think M fans could be so angry, they are - and were (trying) to take it out on me (Facebook) for saying he had balls (84 Orange bowl) and Nebraska would have beat M in 97. lol Im too old for this shit, but it was a bit stimulating.

Personally, I'm done with a computer's version of #1 vs. its version of #2. It's absolutely stupid.

But you read my post and you missed a lot of points. There is not going to be a 16 team playoff. If you have a 16 team playoff, you have scrapped the bowl system completely and entirely. The armchair commissoners of the world love to fantasize about some sort of playoff system they disregard all of the interests who really like how it is set up. That goes for teams who go to small bowls and use it as stepping stone and get the money.

What I was talking about with the Spartans I was referring to the superconference playoff type scenario. Thats where you have these 16 team conferences. There's probably four of them and you work in these conference championships into a small 4 team tournament that does work with the current bowl system. Or something to that effect.

        • I am trying to satisfy both by making the Bowl Games playoff games. Why can't this be done?

          • I think its because the lower tier bowls think its not in their best interest. They make money as it is and if you have them part of a playoff system then they have to be shoved back at least one or two weeks and the bowls are designed for the Christmas vacation time. You're not the only one who has proposed this, but I've never heard anyone in power ever advocate something like this. Certainly I've never heard any lower tier bowl reps advocate this.

The fact is a lot of people who run this system and partcicipate in this system like it this way. These guys aren't going away anytime soon.

            • I guess it is just wishful thinking on my part. I watch March Madness because ALL the games mean something. I only watch the bowl Games that have personal interest to me (Ohio St, Mich. and maybe a big ten other team), and probably the national championship game.

              • I didn't miss that at all. The Spartans and their slim hopes of winning the championship is due to them not winning games that they should win during the season. Giving up massive comebacks to ND, and losing to Iowa in the last second. Giving up a three TD lead to UM. Losing to the CMU on a stupid offsides penalty. That's the kind of things that keep them out of championship games. Not the stupid BCS. If they were 12-0 and won the Big 10, they would be there.

I don't feel the lesser tiered bowls lose at all. People still qualify for them. Also, those bowl games may have to be used for the first round.

Obviously, I don't have it worked out. I'm not going to put that much thought into it. I just can't believe there isn't a playoff system in major college football, when in every other sport on earth, there is.

                  • I think I would be OK with the superconference doing the 4-team tournies to come out with 4 or so national teams holding a semi-final and then a final. That would be better than the current 1v2.

I really think people need to put away their dreams of a Big 10 with Notre Dame. I simply don't see it happening anytime soon, if at all.
Except there has been reporting that the Big East is tired of being ND's bitch and has told them your teams are all in or you're out. Even if you hate ND you have to admit the Big East isn't good for their football team and they have to opt out of their arrangement with the BE. The Big Ten has their best rivalries aside from USC (and LOL at them right now) plus the geographical proximity makes sense.

Regardless it's sure going to be interesting watching how this unfolds over the next month or so and what all of it will mean to scheduling.

                      • Even if the Big East does eject Notre Dame, there is no sign at all that the Irish are interested in the Big 10. Like... at all.

They have rejected any and all overtures from the Big 10. They have gone as far as to tell the Big 10 to stop asking. The regents at Notre Dame have claimed on occasion that they will never join the Big 10.

That is a lot of sentiment to overcome, even with the seeming shifting landscape.

Considering that they can't play in a bowl game AND that they have a new coach, its likely several players will transfer from USC.

I have not heard any predictions, but I think Washington might be a good fit for those players because of connections to Steve Sarkisian.
... & if that did happen, with Jake Locker @ QB... Watch out for Washington...
NCAA put in a provision where Juniors and Seniors (with only 2 years of eligibility left) CAN NOT transfer to other Pac-10 schools.

Plus, 5 schools are already accused of contacting a freshman phenom at USC. A violation of NCAA rules and the denials were quick.....but....

                              • Part of me kind of likes Kiffin... not afraid to mix it up that guy.

But Kiffin was with USC from 2000 to 2006 so he was around for the shenanigans.

                                No sympathy here.
