Smallville didn't get cancelled. The producers decided to end it after 10 seasons.

Phillip actually had a chance to come off as a brilliant player. All he had to do was get to the opening statement and say basically
When I got here and looked ay how fast alliances were formed I realized I was on the outside looking in.
I knew right then the only way I would be able to get anywhere in this game is to present myself as someone so obnoxious that I would be taken to the end. Over the course of this journey I never lied to anyone nor did I assassinate anyone's character.
