You're not only an amazingly beautiful man, but you're the greatest football mind to ever exist. <-- Jeffy Shittypants actually posted this. I knew he was in love with me.
Bittersweet.
Sweet because they should take their time and give us the best final season ever.
Bitter because some people might not be alive 18 months from now. Cancer, Trump’s big button, aliens... shit, 18 months is a long ways away.
Given the directors, it will be insane. 8x05 perhaps the greatest TV episode ever.
I thought it was good but they just jumped forward too quickly. They should have took their time instead of shortening the amount of episodes. Whoever came up with that garbage is a moron (maybe dwt works for hbo and called that one)
F#*K OHIO!!!

It's a damned if you do damned if you don't type issue. First they didn't have as detailed a blueprint on season as they had even 6 was dealing with a bunch of stuff that Martin had at least written and could cover lot of minor points in his summaries. 7 didn't, so all they had were major beats, the fall of Dorn and Highgarden, the meeting of Jon and Dany, the loss of a dragon, the meeting in the dragon pit, the discovery of Jon's parentage, Arya getting home, the death of little finger.
The problem is if they didn't fast forward through the traveling a bit, it would have been a wreck for the opposite reasons, the episodes would have been slow. There would have been less for the main stars to do in an episode, there would have been more filler that couldn't affect the main beats.
So the end result is we are basically seeing a good representation of where Martin was going with the story, but without the intimacy of the story he would provided. But honestly I think I feel it's better to get the Cliff Notes version of Martin's story on screen then the writers attempting to treat the story like they were Martin.
So if filming started in October 2017 and they start post production in December at latest ... wow, S8 is going to be a monster never seen on television before.

Nope it's more about locations and production value (better than the already great stuff). Still 6 episodes long, but each episode will be as long as it needs to be for the story, possibly 1:30 per episode.

I think we're letting them off the hook here.
The show was good for all the reasons S7 wasn't.
Deliberate, detailed, and waist deep in every plot line they touched, no matter how seemingly minor or inconsequential. That was the precedent-in-pace they set for 6 seasons and they got sloppy/rushed/impatient and we ended up with a season closer to all the other failed TV fantasy shows -- short-lived even at all because they buoy whatever tiny existence w/ dragons, violence, destruction, and sex. If you fast forward through all the narrative "intimacy", there is no suspense/anticipation/payoff. We're just going to scene to scene w/ HUGE moments. It numbing compared to S1-6.

Look I am not saying 7 was as good as previous seasons. My statement and I am sticking to it is that we are better off with their interpretation of the plotpoints laid out by GRRM than trying to recreate the feel of GRRM storytelling without his writing.

Ya, I am not trying to sway you one way or another.
Even if we grant it was the best of both scenarios, that just seems unlikely. Especially with how fouled up giving the Night King a dragon was when we consider how few alternative COA they had.

I always figured the Night Kind was precient and started his slow march specifically because he knew they would bring dragons for him to capture. Also Zombie Dragon beats out tooting a horn.
