          • Holy Cow! I so miss the days of playing hide and go seek. They always think that if they can't see you, you can't see them.

Congrats LFIJ on such a sweetheart.

            I love kids!!!!
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

              • Thanks for the kind words everyone. He's a great kid, and I honestly do love coming home every day to see him (and my lovely wife, of course!)

Also, for those of you who were interested, I started the house construction thread over in the off-topic forum here.

And that doesn't have to change when they become teenagers! A lot of comments are made about how tough the teenage years are because of rebellious attitudes, etc. but it doesn't have to be that way. Sure, they are going to be looking for more independence, but you give it to them and make them accountable. I know this doesn't work with every kid, but it happens more often than the stereotype would suggest. I miss the days when my boys were young like your son. They do some really great things at that age. It is fun seeing them in their late teens, early twenties though.

                  • think you've nailed it squirrel - all kids seek freedom/independence as they grow up. Accountability and responsibility are keys there.

-------------------------I have two teenagers and have yet to see any of this. I make the kids accountable as you say and give them independence. I don't give my kids an allowance. I think giving kids an allowance gives them an entitlement feeling. If my kids want money they have to work for it. All jobs have a monetary value. Cleaning a bathrrom has a value. Vacuuming a room has a value. etc. They want money for something they have to earn it just like in the real world.

                          • Yeah Dano, nice balance. No assumption of money just being there, yet you make money easily attainable if his kids choose to put in the effort so it's not the same as growing up poor where sometimes people get an unhealthy focus on obtaining small amounts of money because of the lack of it as a child.

                            • I have three kids, 24 year old son....., never had any problems whatsoever.
An 18 year old son, apart from a couple of alcohol occurances, no problems at all. And a 20 year old daughter...... Who I've got to say, turned into a complete alien from age 14-17....., was sharing the house with a complete stranger! Moody, whingy, temper tantrums, staying out, not letting anyone know where she was, smoking....... Complete nightmare to be honest. Then it all changed over a few months , 18 years old and she met the nicest guy that every father would want for his daughter. But myself or my wife never changed any of our parenting skills to merit the alien change....., it just happened.
