My latest vice is MLBN. They are broadcasting some great stuff on there. I just watched Bob Costas interviewing Ernie Harwell (originally done sometime during last seasons World Series) , and wow, I didn't think I could ever have any more respect for the man. Ernie has become my new hero.
As a kid, you could always find me with a transistor radio in my pocket catching a Tiger game. There was a lightpole down at the high school football field that somehow acted as an antenna and the game came in real clear. We spent countless nights listening to Ernie broadcast the Tigers on WJR because no local station carried the game except on Saturdays, while watching for shooting stars and passing sattelites. Why we got away from that, I'll never know.
Thanks Ernie."Don?t worry about a thing, every little thing is gonna be alright. - Bob Marley "

Great story Sharkie.....it was kind of the same for me. Mom would chase us out of the house in the Summer, telling us that it is nice out, go out and play. Well there was an old guy that listened to all of the Cub games on the radio down the block. A bunch of us kids would sit around that old radio and listen to the braodcast, to this day, the only way I can handle baseball is to listen to it on the radio.AAL:to be determined

Ernie was the best. I remember reading in one of his books that the most important lesson he learned from Red Barber was keeping the listener informed by setting the scene every couple minutes. He learned this by using an egg timer and every three minutes he'd re paint the picture... Now adays I get so frustrated listing to these broadcasters that are so full of themselves they forget to tell you what is happening.
Especially the ones for the Yankees. We can get in the car and drive for twenty minutes or more and have no idea what the score is or the situation. With Ernie you knew right away what was happening and were simply drawn in to the game.Dopeler Effect: The Tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly. - Author unknown

Ernie was the best. I transfered to a CG Station near Cleveland back in 88 or so because I was visiting my sister in Parma Ohio and was able to hear Ernie doing a Tigers game. I got home sick and Fairport Ohio was the closest I could get to Detroit...
Speaking of MLBN, they played the first game of the 68 World Series at about midnight the day after Christmas. I stayed up and watched about 4 innings.
Wow, did that ever bring back the memories.I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on

Watched a little of the 1952 WS between Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Yankees today. Just seeing these old guys play was neat. Men in the crowd wore shirts and ties, some with jackets. Women wore Loooooonnnnnnggggg dresses buttoned up to the neck."Don?t worry about a thing, every little thing is gonna be alright. - Bob Marley "

The game was so much quicker then. The pitchers got the ball and sign and threw the pitch. You didn't have hot-dog players stepping out between every pitch to make three minutes of adjustments to batting gloves and pads.
BTW I blame Reggie Jackson for the proliferation of jackasses and the lenght of today's game.I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on

Originally posted by Sharkbait View PostBeen there, done that. I remember one time hiding under the covers with the audio turned way down, way past my bedtime, and I heard her voice, "How's the Tigers doin', Minnow?" I thought I was going to get the business end of a yardstick, but my mom was way cool. She knew how I loved the Tags. She just said to make sure to turn it off when the game was over so I didn't wear out the batteries. Later on she convinced dad to move the big radio from the living room to my bedroom, that way she could shut it down when I'd fall asleep. She was the bomb.
Is that what they were calling morse code back then? ;)
