    • I was watching this show on the Discovery channel about a tornado in Missouri that hit a trailer. A guy in the trailer was struck by a flying lamp, knocked out, sucked into the tornado, and deposited unharmed in a field a quarter mile away. Here is an exact quote from him:

"When the tur-nay-da hit, it knocked me out. They said since I was unconscious it didn't hurt near as much when I landed than it woulda did."

Don't know why it made my day. I guess it was because I felt a little smarter after hearing that.
It's so flat you can watch your dog run away for three days.

        • This totally made my day:

Yesterday was my kindergartners Tea Party and Reading session.

During the entire K school year, these children have been learning to read and write already (I went thru the same district and we were not reading or writing in grade K).

So each child invited their family to come watch them read their short story in front of the class and visitors while serving up breakfast treats and drinks.

The teachers set each kids story up with, "IF you had a wish that could come true, what would it be......"

Mind you, up until we heard her read her story, we had no idea what she wrote about.

This is what my kid wrote:

"I wish I could clean up the world. I would like to clean up the world because it needs it. Thank you!"

Simple yet a bit profound to this parent of a 5.5 year old.

Perhaps watching her parents volunteer for the occasional Earth Day event and cleaning up our campsites so they are cleaner than we found them actually rubbed off.

          Who knew?

          • Way to go Gonz. Kids learn a lot from watching and listening to their parents even when your not "teaching". As a matter of fact they learn way more(life pertaining) in this type of setting than an actual "teaching" setting.

            • That's really cool Gonz. You and your wiffe must be very proud.

I'm sure if Ben did the same assignment he'd wish for more Thomas trains, a Happy Meal or to see his cousin Abe in Michigan.

Proud truth is my kid is the only one out of the class to wish for something that was for the betterment of the masses.

All the other kids wished for more toys or trips or games. Stuff.

The only other kid I got a kick out of wished he could fly so he could see the world. That kids going places.

It shows what they are being taught especially at the root level.

                      Congrats!

.....there will be days that you wonder "what is she thinking?" .......but those days are well ahead (but I am informing you......they will be there.)

...and my Granddaughter is also graduating from Kindergarten.

I can not believe they have the ability to read and write.

I stopped by her house tonight to pick up tickets for the upcoming Dance Recital and she insisted on showing me her "folder". Note: It was a binder with 3" rings and was quite full. She started at the beginning. We got to about Thanksgiving before I had to leave. I could not have been more impressed with her ability to identify the reason for the page and read it to me.........

Hell, most of the stuff she showed me we did not do until Grade 1. Introduction to some of the things we did not do until Grade 3.

I am thinking that by Grade 3 they will be learning what I started to learn in Grade 6.

You can ask anyone that knows me and she will probably be smarter than me by 7th Grade......or maybe sooner.

                          • The problem is that the younger they start education, the more stress and anxiety disorders develop among our kids. While I'm in favor (obviously) of early childhood education, we have started to go too far. Three - four years old is too young to deal with learning alphabets, writing, and math. These kids are still just learning how to cope away from mommy.

                            • I think you have to be 5 in Kindergarten and unlike when I was brought up, many have already gotten over that from daycare even if it is only one or two days a week.

My granddaughter suffered zero seperation anxiety in fact, it was an event they prepared for a year in advance and when it came time it was like she was heading to Disneyland, not wondering why all of a sudden she was being forced to go to this place with all these other people she didn't know.

                              • By choice not necessity as my parents have been her childcare forever, my kid was involved in pre-school 3 days a week from 9-2:30 starting at age 3 for about a full year time (or 2 "semesters"). Something I was never able to attend because of finances back in the day. And they say that kids that attend pre-school have a big percentage advantage over those that didn't in attending secondary schooling.

With our kid being an only child, pre-school helped her socializing skills immensely and there is no doubt better prepared her for K.

When taking into consideration if we should hold her back from kindergarten until she was closer to 6 (as many suggest you should), based on her test scores, she was ready at age 4 (September school start and then turning 5 on 11/20). We could always hold her back if she couldn't keep up but she's easily keeping up with kids that are already near 7 years old in her K class.

We are lucky early on in the fact that our child often chides her grandmother into walking her to school earlier than needed. She wants to be there to learn new things and socialize.

I guess what I'm trying to say is every kid is different and will handle their environment in their own way.
