                  • My oldest son Max just started taking guitar lessons from an organization called "School of Rock" (yes, like the movie) where they teach music in the context of a rock band. So they have normal individual lessons, plus they rehearse songs together as a band and play a few shows.

This weekend, Max auditioned for and made the "House Band", which is comprised of the school's best students. The House Band plays even more shows.

I wish I could show the entire piece that he played for the audition, cause it blew my mind. But he hasn't video taped it yet. It was something he'd been writing over the past few months. He recorded his own backing tracks (Drums and Guitar) then solo'd over it. All I have is this early snapshot of the intro lead guitar track ...

                          • Max is really talented, wow!! How old is he? It's kind of surreal seeing him at such a young age into that music!! And, I feel compelled to ask him to play some Rage Against the Machine...

                            • Thanks everyone for indulging the proud Dad again.

Deb, Max is 17. He's like a musical sponge. He just soaks up everything around him. Since I was a metal fan back in the day, he's had easy access to my collection. I'd say his musical awakening was when he listened to "Operation Mindcrime" by Queensryche when he was about 13. Since he liked that so much, I intro'd him to Tool and Dream Theater (other progressive rock bands) and he just exploded from there with his own discoveries of both classic and modern metal.

What's super cool is that now he's introducing me to great music. He found Pantera himself; I had never really paid attention to them before. And there are some crazy good modern metal bands like Protest the Hero, August Burns Red, Tesseract, etc that I would never have discovered myself.

                              • I imagine it's a lot of fun sharing music together with him! I remember what an audiophile you are...I bet he's learned a lot from you. Does he appreciate Cake?

But, really, here's my request!! lol
