There are however death announcements, and such. Am I wrong that death records are public records, that at least a death (or more than one dammit) in the area in the correct age range should be verifiable?
Me either. Seems like there should be some public record that could at least make it a definite possibility. The possibility of that story being fabricated bothers me, I guess because of how emotionally it hit me.
That kind of manipulation would really upset me. Don't play me like a diggeridoo mother ......

The notices in the paper are nothing more than advertising space sold by that paper.
I am not sure if municipalities are required to make death certificate registration public though.
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.
I just talked to a friend of mine here in Canada who is public relations director at our trauma hospital. Here in Canada a hospital can disseminate information on the condition of a patient to media outlets except in extraordinary circumstances. The hospital can release a statement indicating an unidentified patient passed while in the arms of Santa however, for privacy concerns, No other information can be released at this time.
It seems to me the parents would have gone public by now were the story true.
Yep. Every county has records on death numbers (even if names are not included in the data). It would be verifiable at least that a death in the correct age range occured at the time.

Funeral notices in newspapers here come directly from licenced funeral agents. This reminds me of a funny story. Years ago, the director of one funeral home used to drop by personally everyday to give the newsroom his death notices.
at the time we had a sports director who was a blowhard and knew everything there was to know.
One day the funeral director said to me "in our business we have a process for guys like him, we give 'em an enema and put the rest in a shoe box."
But he couldn't really because it would have meant abandoning the program before the cotton bowl, and contradicted everything he preached all year if he did that.
But worked out well for KZoo so far.

The following makes my day because my boy OZ could have had his beautiful young family possibly harmed by this uncovered plot. Hopefully, they got all of them.
Raids foil planned Melbourne Christmas terror attack, police say

Australian police say five men are accused of planning a Christmas Day terror attack targeting a number of landmarks in Melbourne, the country's second largest city.
The five suspects, all in their early 20s, were expected to appear in court Friday to be charged with acts in preparation of a terrorist event. They are believed to have been "self-radicalized" and inspired by ISIS, police said.
Four of the five suspects were born in Australia. The fifth is from Egypt. They were arrested in a series of overnight raids at properties in Melbourne's northern suburbs.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton told reporters that police had gathered evidence in the raids that the plotters were planning to use explosives in their attack.
"We gathered the makings of an improvised explosive device," he said.
Ashton said the suspects had planned attacks on Melbourne's Flinders Street train station, neighboring Federation Square and nearby St. Paul's Cathedral.
"If this had got under our guard this would have been a significant attack," Ashton told reporters. "Certainly (there was the) potential for quite a number of people to be injured or killed in this attack."
Ashton said police had been watching the alleged plotters for some time, adding that intelligence suggested no threats to any other events.
Victoria state Premier Daniel Andrews said that extra police would patrol the streets of Melbourne on the holiday.
