Coast Guard crew rescues 3 near Cape May, N.J.
January 7th, 2009
CAPE MAY, N.J.- The Coast Guard rescued three people Wednesday aboard a disabled 72-foot fishing boat 100 miles off the coast of Cape May, N.J.
The Coast Guard received a call at 6:26 a.m. Tuesday from a crew member aboard the Miss Judith, homeported in Freeport, N.Y., reporting engine failure due to inoperative batteries. The crew confirmed the boat was not in distress and was equipped with a life raft and an emergency position indicating radio beacon.
The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Mako, homeported in Cape May, arrived on scene with replacement batteries. The crew replaced the batteries and were unable to restart the boat due to engine failure.
The crew of the Mako is towing the Miss Judith and crew to Cape May. The owner and operator of the boat contacted commercial assistance for relief of the tow once they arrive near Cape May.
No estimated time of arrival has been set.I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on

We got out there after dark on the 6th and transfered 4 150 lb batteries from our small boat to the fishing boat in about 8 foot seas, spent a couple of hours helping to install them, only to find out that the engine still wouldn't start. We had to take the boat in tow and could only make about 5 knots back to Cape May. We ended up getting the crap beat out of us as the seas built to about 10 ft and then weren't able to pass the tow to commercial salvage until about 5 in the afternoon on the 7th. It was looong couple of days.#birdsarentreal
