Some of you for sure already hear about what it’s going on in Europe, the so called “public debt crisis” of some of the Euro countries. For sure you already saw images of huge riots in Greece with turmoil’s between citizens and police.
Austerity is in Portugal for about a year and a half now. The receipt is the same as in Greece and Ireland, increasing taxes, decreasing wages, cutting in government expenses…
At first Portuguese people accepted the sacrifice without riots, but recently and after a year and a half of austerity the government didn’t show any improvements. We did our part, they didn’t (cutting in their expenses) and asked for even more from the people announcing more austerity measures.
Portuguese people said “that’s enough” and on the 15th of September about 1 million people protested on the street against more austerity measures. That’s 10% of Portugal’s population.
Don’t want to enter in discussions about monetary politic and austerity measures; what makes my day is the way we are protesting…peacefully! Contrary to what is happening in Greece and Spain.
In the huge street protest In Lisbon on 15th of September a girl became famous for hugging a police officer…the idea that came from that photo is that police forces are also suffering with the austerity measures, and that citizens and the police are on the same side. No reason to fight each other.
So about two days ago this came out…and I found it funny:
