  • While my parents didnt have a lot, they were willing to share. Our deal pretty much was that I had to come up with half. New Sega? New bike? Baseball mitt? Car? I had to come up with my share before there was any discussion.

This lead to my concept of money, and the ability to work towards that money and my goal. Sure I could take out the trash for a few bucks or shovel the sidewalk, but it didnt really mean much to me until I had a goal to shoot for and then come up with the means to get it.

Then, especially when I got older, I learned that just paying for the item was not always the end game. Bikes needed new tires, Segas required games to play, cars needed insurance. So it didnt matter that I worked hard enough to get the item I wanted. I had to keep working to keep that item gonig. Lots of lessons there.

--------------------------Imagine that. Good for you Mark. No work no pay. I would imagine there are numerous parents--mostly liberals(for SLF's sake)--just continuing to pay.

"I disagree that it is a liberal thing, and I disagree that is the main culprit for the "culture of entitlement.""
----------------------Then what is the main culprit. Don't really understand your last paragraph. Not really sure I want too.

"Kids will learn about the real world soon enough in my opinion."
-------------------------Ya and they'll be starting behing the eight ball. Why do we get are children involved in sports at an early age but "life lessons" can be learned later. That's SOOOOOOOOOO stupid.

"I've tried doing allowances with my kids tied to chores, but it hasn't really worked."
-----------------------------So they get an allowance anyway. Can you say entitled. My kids get nothing unless they work for it. PERIOD!!!

      • Yeah well you are a better man for it. You're keeping a stiff upper lip and showing them who's boss.

I never said I'm giving them an allowance. I said what I said, I tried to tie money to chores to it and it didn't really work. So I don't really give them an allowance.

My kids are not starting behind the 8 ball. Nope, they get good grades in school. They do a lot of extra activities and do pretty good at them.

You may try to tie it to some conservative/liberal mumbo jumbo, but the concept of an allowance comes from the trust fund types. You don't really find too many liberals there. But if it massages your ego, by all means go for it. But I'll say the older generation always did it better in their own eyes.

I'm sure you don't get it DanO. Because your kids are special and they know it! They aren't entitled like those other kids.

Personally I contend that the entitlement of kids started when life began to revolve around kids. When you can't get a beer at a baseball game because there were kids around, when you can't smoke because "think of the children," where every child is a blessing and no child should ever be left behind.

When kids are elevated above adults, what do you expect will happen.

That said, I, like you, have nothing to back this up.

I wasn't paid to do chores. I was expected to do chores to pull my weight around the house.

but i have been working continuously since I was 12 and haven't taken a dime from anyone for nearly 20 years.

                • if you think about it...when babies are born they are given everything they need. As babies turn to toddlers, and then "kids" it's about teaching them that not everything is given to them.

SLF - I grew up similarly. Allowance was given for a period of time to do "chores" but when I grew old enough to work, chores were an expectation.

What are you talking about? You don't know the first thing about my kids or what I give them. I don't give them an allowance. I told I tried tying it to chores and it didn't work. So I don't give it to them. In plain terms they don't get stipend every week and you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

The most important reason you should gets your kids into sports is if they enjoy it. They get to have fun and play with their friends and meet new friends. Over their life they probably are benefitting from it, learning teamwork and other crap like that, but you should first and foremost get them into sports if they like it.

Agreed. it's best to unexpectedly trip them and teach them not to cry (start this at 4) Teach them life is a mean mutha out to get them. Sleep derpivation helps them get ready for being tired as an older person too. Let them know they get a standard food (gruel) and if they do chores they earn better food (gruel and bread)

only partly but the reply was not aimed at you (though I used your quote). I've seen good kids from both approaches and monsters from both. There is no cookie cutter answer to raising kids. It does appear to help when they are loved and not beat often. I got beat with belts, paddles and pretty much anything they could get their hands on from age 4 to 16. I don't recommend that approach.

                              • my dad died when I was 13, before that he was gone a year at a time on deployments.. mom had five kids to take care of, I decided she didn't need another kid to take care of so I grew up quick and found some odd jobs that helped put food on the table because there wasn't much there, and I liked to eat...My mom always had a special place in my heart and always will.. I never took a cent and never asked for one.. but I spoiled my kids with love, just like my mom did for me..
