While my parents didnt have a lot, they were willing to share. Our deal pretty much was that I had to come up with half. New Sega? New bike? Baseball mitt? Car? I had to come up with my share before there was any discussion.
This lead to my concept of money, and the ability to work towards that money and my goal. Sure I could take out the trash for a few bucks or shovel the sidewalk, but it didnt really mean much to me until I had a goal to shoot for and then come up with the means to get it.
Then, especially when I got older, I learned that just paying for the item was not always the end game. Bikes needed new tires, Segas required games to play, cars needed insurance. So it didnt matter that I worked hard enough to get the item I wanted. I had to keep working to keep that item gonig. Lots of lessons there.
