Detroit Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood has suffered another setback in his attempt to return from sports hernia surgery on Jan. 11, as the club today placed him on long-term injured reserve, retroactive to last week.
Joey MacDonald has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins and will dress as Jimmy Howard's backup tonight against the Vancouver Canucks.
Osgood isn't eligible to come off long-term IR until the final two games of the regular season, April 8-10 vs. Chicago.
"We're back to square one with him,'' Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "Everybody's frustrated. When we took him off LTI 10 days ago, the player, the doctor and the trainers all signed off on it. He felt good.
"The first day he had a full practice he felt sore but though he was going to push through it. I think he felt the pressure to come back with the playoffs looming. It's obvious he's not anywhere close to playing.''
Holland said Osgood will take a few days off and then hopefully start practicing again.
"It's been apparent he needs 7 to 10 days of full practices to convince himself he's healthy and to get his level of performance up to the point where he feels he can be effective at NHL game level.
"I know Chris is very frustrated, disappointed. He wanted to get back and play some games.''
Also, Holland said forward Jiri Hudler will play tonight. That gives the team 12 forwards. They will scratch a defenseman.I made baseball as fun as doing your taxes!

Interesting list...NHL games lost to injury. Wings only 12th this year; last year, they were third.

Well, as far as I can tell he only attempts to kill people on the field of play. You know, like Todd Bertuzzi and Marty McSorley.
That is bullshit! Did you watch Marty though his career? He was the 'The Great One's" Bodyguard and one of the toughest guys to every play the game. Wayne Gretzky would not approve a trade without McSorley coming along with him. He was crucified after a terrible mistake of hitting Brashear with his stick after Brashear would not fight after taking out his goaltender in Boston - injuring his knee which resulted in the goalie being stretchered off. McSorley played 18 years in the NHL and never played again after this suspension, the longest in NHL history.
Welcome to Gary Bettmans NHL (take cheap shots and run away!) To say McSorley was out to "kill people" is ignorant on your part. After that many years, he's a killer ?? (on his very last shift) - right!Last edited by WingsFan; March 26, 2011, 03:59 AM.

Video Interview: Marty McSorley In 2000, while playing for the Boston Bruins, McSorley slashed former Vancouver Canucks enforcer Donald Brashear across the head in the closing seconds of a game. McSorley was suspended by the National Hockey League for 18 months and fined $72,000. The assault also led to a criminal conviction and 18 months of probation.
