The third goal was VERY difficult to stop. Face off won to the top of the key, open wrister over the stick side shoulder, NOT an easy shot to stop by any means. Howard did fine. Our penalty kill (1st in the NHL, last I checked) failed him in every way.

You'd have me buying it if it wasn't a clean shot with no one in the way. Howard saw that shot from start to finish and simply whiffed on it. It happens to every goalie, believe it or not... sometimes they make a bad play. Astonishing.

He simply seemed to struggle with following the puck... he looked a little tentative trying to handle it, like every shot was getting to him a tenth of a second faster than he thought it would. Hardly a cause for worry, and likely just a case of making his first ever playoff start. It happens.

But you are correct that the rest of the team did him no favors when killing penalties. The first two goals there was absolutely nothing Howard could have done. The Penalty Kill looked like garbage, and Phoenix owned the entire zone when they were on the man advantage.

All in all, the Wings didn't play badly at all. When all things were even, they were the better team. But they have to either not get penalties (which isn't going to happen) or they're going to have to be a lot better when down a man.

Dats played really well and I thought it was straight up bullshit there was a none call when Lids left the ice bleeding from a highstick.

Doan played a helluva hardnosed game. I wish we had him on our side. This isnt going to be the cake walk I invisioned after the way we've been playing. They stood us up on the blueline everytime down the ice from mid 2 period til the end of the game.

They out hustled us and we were horrid on faceoffs.

I agree they were outhustled and were sloppy in their puck handling. At times it seemed there were 14 coyotes on the ice.

Wings definately need this next game.

It was a good start to the game last night.

While WINGS fans are questioning some things, I saw BRYZ for AZ give up a very soft goal (the final DET score) as well.

Could have been worse.

Game 2 should be electric.

If there are not enough reasons to root against the Coyotes (Gary Bettman) Not only are Phoenix copying the White-Out of the Winnipeg Jets, they now have some stupid idea to throw snakes on the ice. Not sure what is worse, this or when Florida was throwing plastic rats on the ice. Why do all these team try to mess with are tradition?

I'm really glad to see Abdelkader get his shot. The kid is really scrappy and by the looks of things we'll need it. Jason Williams needs to be sent to the minors. As in right now.
