If its his name and his holding companies that had ownership of the Lions and not Marion's then I don't think there would be an issue.
    Give me a break!

Ya, Marion is the one who is owns the controlling stock but for anyone to suggest that a husband and wife do not have mingled interest in investments or income streams is plain irresponsible. While they have children that they can name as inheritors of their holdings, who do you think has first inheritance rights?

Not even talking about inheriting, explain to me how a husband and wife do not have intermingled finances? ........and no input to possibly increasing the income stream......

The ownership in her name is strictly to stay within the rules of the sports franchises need to make sure that there are no ties to gambling. Can anyone honestly say that if your wife has a major share in a Casino you have no ties to gambling?
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

    • The Hawks really impressed me yesterday. They played hard and I actually thought they were going to win. Question is was that the best they can play. I think it might be. Wings didn't play all that well but pulled it out. The rest will do them good.

Kudos to Ozzie. He won the game.

      BRING ON THE PENS!!!!

      GO LIONS "09" !!!!!!!!!

      • While I'm pretty sure the comment was made in jest, Ilitch buying the Lions doesn't guarantee anything. Look at the Tigers. Weren't they garbage for 10+ years before 2006?

With our luck the first 10 years of the Lions under Mr. I (should he live that long) would mirror the first 10 years of the Tigers under Mr. I.......

I am just stating that if there would be a legal reason why the NFL would block Mr. Illitch from owning an NFL team, I am pretty sure it would also affect his ownership of two other high profile sport franchises he has.

We could debate for ever the moral and or financial ramifications of Husband and Wife with competing interests all we want. I think your mostly right in that regard. I just don't think it would affect his entry into the NFL.

I believe it does, but, I could be wrong ( and it would not be the first time).

It maybe. But I am pretty sure all 4 major leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL) have player and owner policies limiting connections to gambling. I think they are all pretty similar. So maybe more of this may come up in the future ala the Rooney family. But if that happened I am sure he would probably offload the sports teams and maybe Little Ceaser's to his children and he would join his wife in running the Motor City Casino.

                      • When did Ilitch's start their casino? Was it after the Tigers purchase? It may be harder to buy a team than to retain one.

As long as the casino doesn't have sports betting, I'm not sure what the big deal is anyway.

The closest issue I found is that much like the NFL the rules are pretty forward that one can not own a gambling business and an MLB team. Apparently there may have been a slight issue not with Marion owning Motor City Casino, but that she is also a Chairman on Illitch Holdings which owns the Tigers. But even then it came down to Michael Illitch is the listed owner, and that Illitch Holdings has no interest in an any gambling orginizations even if Marion does.

Like I said Its fishy. It probably shouldn't be allowed. But how legally can someone have something held against them for something someone else is doing even if that someone is his wife.

                            • Can you own another major pro sports team and own an NFL team? I thought there was a rule in the NFL preventing that. Althought I'm not sure how that would hold up in court even if there was one.

A gambling tie rule may also not actually hold up in court. In baseball those kind of rules are more likely to hold up due to anti-trust exempions but the NFL doesn't have the same type of exemption.

The Maloof's (sp?) get around the issue by not allow any betting on NBA games at the palms I believe
