  • If Bettman had balls:
"The National Hockey League has enormous respect for Tiger Woods, for all his accomplishments and for his work with the community," NHL spokesman Frank Brown said. "We think he's a great bowler."
    The only logical explanation is:
I'm about to die and this is my Jacob's Ladder

    • Hey Gonz. How the Ducks doing?????

"I am not a hockey expert..........."
----------------------Maybe not but your post was pretty much dead nuts on.

"One day after the Red Wings absorbed as tough a loss in the Stanley Cup finals as possible, outside of an elimination game, Babcock took exception to a pair of goalie interference calls assessed to his team during overtime on Monday night. "
---------------------------Very nice Mike. Babcock never complains about the officiating. As a matter of fact he usually talks highly/favorably about it. He's just laid the groundwork for the Wings to be all over Fluery. Go get em Homer.

      • I consider myself a casual hockey fan at best. I don't get whatever channel hockey is on. I could get it for an extra 12 bucks a month, but I chose not to because regular season hockey does not interest me. I find the season to be too long and the games don't have enough intensity for my liking. It is pretty much the same for me when it comes to the NBA. I probably would have watched a playoff game or two had they been available to me, but would probably not be making plans to watch tonight if the Red Wings were not playing. I think that hockey is a niche sport and will never have widespread appeal. They should contract the warm weather teams and shorten the season and make it tougher to get into the playoffs to make the regular season more relevant. It is fucking 90 degrees here and they are still playing hockey and basketball? WTF? I think winter sports should be played in the winter but that is probably another discussion.

        • Actually, hockey seemed like a prime candidate for the international leagues they're always talking about. You could have a league with the same number of teams, except they're in Canada, the US, Russia, Sweden, Finland, etc.
I made baseball as fun as doing your taxes!

            • Another thing Babcock should have hollered ab out was the tripping call...a terrible joke

You know, if we take a look at this with an unbiased eye, This has had all the makings of a sports novel. The smart veterans against the talented kids, Mario and his wife vs ken holland, scotty bowman, stevie and gordie. The last second goal to stave off elimination for another day...A classic David and Goliath tale.... For this one to have a happy and proper ending, Goliath better win this time!

              • It all comes down to the first 5 minutes. Pittsburgh is going to be very hyped. We need to match their intensity and keep it scoreless. They may even be too hyped and we need to take advantage if they make a mistake.

"Another thing Babcock should have hollered ab out was the tripping call...a terrible joke."
---------------------------He could have also bitched at the numerous obstruction calls that weren't called against the Pens but that wasn't his intent. Babcock never bitches about the refs but he did so in this case to make room for Homer to play in front of the net. It was a calculated bitch and I think a good one.

Triple-OT showdown draws highest ratings for Game 5 since 2002
                      Associated Press
                      *Updated: June 3, 2008, 8:17 PM ET

NEW YORK -- The triple-overtime thriller in the Stanley Cup finals Monday night drew the highest ratings for a Game 5 since 2002.

The Pittsburgh Penguins' 4-3 win to avoid elimination against the Detroit Red Wings earned a 4.3 overnight rating and an 8 share on NBC. That's a 79 percent increase over last year's 2.4 for Game 5 between Anaheim and Ottawa.

It was the best Game 5 rating since the Carolina-Detroit matchup in 2002 drew a 4.5.

Game 4 on Saturday earned a 2.3 national rating and 5 share, up 21 percent over last year's 1.9.

The rating is the percentage watching a program among homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned into the broadcast among those households with TVs on at the time. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.

*I also previously read that the NHL playoffs overall ratings have been way up all the way through.

I watched Game 5 in its entirety from So Cal.
What a surprise! A higher rating than last years game 5? It only rivals a previous game in 2002? And I am betting it was Carolina that was driving the ratings in that game. Hell, those Pittsburg, Carolina and Duck fans are the best in the NHL. After all, it was a home game for the Wings and we all know you should be at the game, not watch it on TV.

.....on another note......the NHL has chosen Versus as their network of choice to broadcast their games. This choice alone, prevents viewers from participating. (I know the rest of the finals are on NBC but, NBC hired all of Versus people to do their games as they have little knowledge in how to air a Championship Sporting Event. Go figure!)
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.
