  • The Pittsburgh Penguins' first victory over the Detroit Red Wings on NBC drew the best overnight rating for a third game of the Stanley Cup finals in six years.

Pittsburgh's 3-2 win on Wednesday night earned a 2.8 national rating and an 18.2 rating in Detroit, beating out the 15.9 rating for the Pistons' matchup with the Boston Celtics.

Game 5 of the NBA's Eastern Conference finals drew a 5.3 national rating.

The rating is the percentage watching a program among homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned into the broadcast among those households with TVs on at the time.

The combination of Games 1, 2 and 3 have made this the highest-rated and most-watched opening games of the Stanley Cup finals since Detroit faced Carolina in 2002.

The rating for Wednesday night's game represented an 87-percent increase over last year's Game 3 between Anaheim and Ottawa.
    Heh, heh.

    • 2. Name one other top center who play defenseman in a pinch like Fedorov did.
That certainly was a rarity and I believe I confused your statement about playing the blueline from that of actually playing defense from that of a forward dropping back to help the D.

      3. You said he "There is a difference between pacing yourself and not showing up in games. Yz always showed up to play in big games. Fed showed up when his girlfriend was not in town." Utter rubbish. The same post you claimed he only time he worked was for a 27 million dollar bonus and you couldn't remember if he even played on the 2002 cup winner. That leads me to believe you couldn't have watched those playoffs. Yzerman could barely skate because of his knee so he had to play wing and Fedorov anchored his line. After they won Yzerman said Fed carried him during the cup run. The Captain himself said that. I don't think their was a 27 million dollar bonus. He worked pretty hard and could have won the Conn Smythe instead of Lidstrom, but you couldn't remember if the slacker Played? Thats odd.
Maybe the oddity comes from by the time the 02 season had arrived, my disgust with his turn it on turn it off performances were uninspiring. I truly could not remember anything that stood out in his performance in the 02 run and it probably is because my opinion of him was already jaded and when he did well, I looked in the other direction choosing when to witness greatness and when to ignore an individual player.

Hell I wasn't even a big Fedorov supporter, but this stuff is malarkey. Absolute malarkey. And it gets worse as the years go by, the next thing we'll know he didn't even play on ther Red Wings.
Naw, I doubt my memory will ever get that bad. To me he will always be most disappointing talent the Wings have ever had.
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.

      • NBC received a 2.8 national overnight rating on Wednesdays game — an increase of more than 250% from last years Game 3 between Ottawa and Anaheim. That game registered a 1.1, equaling the lowest prime-time rating in network history. The Red Wings and Penguins have the spotlight Saturday night(no NBA).

Wings will see if Holmstrom can practice Friday

by Ansar Khan Thursday May 29, 2008, 11:38 AM

Perhaps Tomas Holmstrom's injury is worse than the Red Wings originally believed. When I spoke to general manager Ken Holland this morning, he said Holmstrom is "a little sore but he feels OK,'' and that "our expectation is he'll be in the lineup Saturday.''
But I just talked to Holland again and he said, "The plan is we're going to see if he can practice (Friday).''
Asked about a report that Holmstrom is out for the series with a sports hernia, which idled him late in the regular season, Holland said, "Nobody has told me he's out for the series.''

Holmstrom was leveled (pitchforked) by Hal Gill with about six minutes left in Game 3. Holmstrom landed on his back and did not return to the game. He left the arena with a noticeable limp.
Holland said team doctor Tony Colucci told him Holmstrom didn't feel any worse today than he did Thursday.
"(Colucci) told me that's a good thing,'' Holland said. "He wasn't any more swollen today than last night.''

The cross-checking he took last game was pretty bad. But he refuses to be intimidated. It must be hard to be such a marked man. His goals are now routinely disallowed, while his body is a pinata for opposing defensemen and goalies.

                  • The Red Wings refuted a TSN report Thursday that said Holmstrom is suffering from groin/sports hernia condition. Wings coach Mike Babcock said Thursday that Holmstrom "didn't feel too good" after Game 3 but expected Holmstrom to have enough time to recover and play Saturday. Holmstrom has some kind of lower-body injury, possibly in a knee, after taking a hard fall while scrapping with Pittsburgh defenseman Hal Gill late in the third period.

                    • That wasn't "scrapping". Looks to me that Pittsburg is out to knock our guys down with crosschecks if they get in front of the goalie. If the league wants this kind of play, we need to take a couple cheap shots on the kid.

                      • I doubt that Babcock would tell the Penguins where Homer's injury is. It has been a long time since the Wings lived by the "You go after our stars, we'll go after yours" creed. And it's long overdue.
