4 million out of a 71 million cap is a very sizable slice of the pie, especially for a player that is a shell of himself. He needs to go. Period.

He's supposed to be our big guy with a big shot so he gets prime opportunities and line-mates that someone with actual skill and passion/intensity could capitalize on.
But yeah I agree completely, we need to get rid of that salary.20132014 AAL: Glover Quin #27

Franzen scored 41 points (16 goals 25 assist) in 54 games.
Weiss 4 points (2 goals 2 assists) in 26 games
Cleary 8 points (4 goals 4 assists) in 52 games
Bertuzzi 16 points (9 goals 7 assists) in 59 games
Sammy 3 points (1 goal 2 assists) in 26 games
I know people like to beat up on Franzen but he's the least of our worries. Yes he could use his frame more but his length of contract should be the selling point not the fact that he doesn't produce.F#*K OHIO!!!
You're not only an amazingly beautiful man, but you're the greatest football mind to ever exist. <-- Jeffy Shittypants actually posted this. I knew he was in love with me.

You should really look at FA and what it takes to sign people of his point production. Its seriously not like it was 2-3 years ago.
WEISS IS MAKING 5 MILLION A YEAR AND HE SUCKS!
NHL FA is minimal at bestF#*K OHIO!!!

Weiss was hurt the whole year with the sports hernia and surgery. Disappointing yes, very much so, won't say he sucks - have to give him the benefit of doubt with an incomplete grade.
At this point, I think the Red Wings are stuck with Franzen. Hero to goat - everyone hates him around here and he didn't help himself with his comments about scoring goals then not talking at all to the media - that is never good. I would take a second round pick for him.

And hey, look at that! That's exactly what Franzen's contract is!

Both are stupid as fuck. Amnesty the guy and shed his albatross of a contract, for God's sake.

Franzen underachieved in the playoffs, but his $3.95-million salary cap hit makes him more attractive to keep than to catapult. He produced 16 goals among 41 points in 54 regular-season games, well above a 20-goal average. He was quiet in the postseason, again, but so were the young guys that were so key to the Wings even making the playoffs: Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Jurco.
“To think we’re out because of one person not scoring,” Holland said, “that’s a fantasy.”

And yes, for what it's worth, it's a combination of two things:
1) He's due 4 million a year, which is not insignificant scratch when you have a 70 million cap. That in and of itself isn't brutal, if not for...
2) He's due 4 million a year until 2020!
I understand Holland wants to honor the contracts signed. I get that he wants to be a good guy to show prospects and free agents that the Wings are a team that honors their contracts. I get it. I really do.
When that initial contract was signed, yeah... the Wings could be on the hook for that because there was no cap. As Franzen slowed down, there'd be no real problem with him being a $4 million dollar 4th line man, because Illitch was willing to pay it.
But the rules have changed, and they have changed significantly. The Wings don't have that luxury of just throwing out money to whomever they want and having the most expensive fourth line in the league... and 4 million dollars for Franzen as he approaches 40 will be a heavy albatross on their necks in the very near future.
This is when Holland has to bring Johan into his office and say, "Listen. I know this sucks. But I can't spend 100 million anymore to field a team, and I can't afford to pay you nearly 4 million when you're 40. I need to make a move for the betterment of the team moving forward. I'm sorry, but your contract is crippling. I have to amnesty you. I'm really, really, really sorry."

I don't usually read this guy, don't know if this has been posted in another thread. I think Froot has noted him in the past.
Mike Ilitch Has Colon Cancer
Wings GM Ken Holland has been reporting directly to Chris Ilitch regarding hockey operations and that their relationship is not as cozy as the one Holland enjoyed with Mike Ilitch. Multiple sources have informed me that Holland has been frustrated at times with the younger Ilitch and has had at least one “take this job and shove it” moment.

THAT is a factor, I am sure, now that I think about it.
Chris Illitch is (by accounts I've heard) far more interested in the Tigers and Wings being profitable than being winners. Not that he doesn't want to win (I'm sure he does), but he feels that the teams need to be on a tighter budget.
He might not want to pay Franzen money to not play.
