  • Pronger's really cut down on a lot of the cheap shots these last couple of seasons. Probably because he realizes that he's nearing the end of his career and it's really hard to sell himself to the Hall of Fame with the reputation of being a dirty player.

I never understood why he took such cheap shots to begin with. He was hardly outmatched physically in the league.

    • CHEMIC,

      Nice try.

He's 1st ballot HOF no matter what. And that has been the case for years already.

      • Much like the NFL, the NHL has a Hall of Very Good. Its not like Pronger has to meet some high threshold like MLB.

If he wins another Cup and keeps his nose clean? Most likely.

As it stands... ehhh... maybe, maybe not. Don't discount how his reputation as the league's "dirtiest player" can become a factor. I can almost guarantee you that there's not a single HoF voter in the Detroit area that will vote for him on the first ballot... way too much bad blood stemming from the incident where he tried to take out Yzerman's knee in the playoffs, maliciously and intentionally.

And I'm sure there's many a team that could tell their own stories about Pronger the cheap shot master.

You're right that just on his accomplishments, he should be. But players have been denied that honor for more petty reasons in the past.

          • I don't have anything personal against him like some outspoken folks on this board.

He's been traded a couple times now for a lot in return because NHL teams know he's a guy you want on your team. For many reasons. Most importantly, he does what it takes to win. Like a HOF should.

My point is that Pronger has also made a lot of enemies in his career because of his malicious play on the ice. It could become a factor, especially with how the league has been trying to clean up their image over the last decade.

Simply by the numbers and what he has accomplished, he should be a first ballot Hall of Famer. I honestly hope he is... I really dislike how a lot of Hall of Fame voting has put players' characters on trial lately.

              • Well, if you see him belonging in the HOF, we're square (on the same page in that regard).

I don't see his past interferring with his rightful place with the best ever to play the game.

He didn't try to take out Stevie Y's knee, he was head hunting and Yserman ducked at the perfect time. Pronger blew out his own knee.

                  • Leighton, the journeyman who was claimed by the Flyers on WAVIERS in December had his third shutout in this series. He is 5-1 since taking over after Brian Boucher was hurt in the second round. Again!!, goalkeeping in today's game is the most overrated position. (Again) Most goals are a perfect shot or redirection or (ie luck bounce). If a goalie stays in position, that what it usually takes to score,

(again) I don't buy this riding a hot goalie or standing on his head crap. This is another reason you have been seeing goalies get hurt or benched and the replacement does fine. The other team make the goalie look good most of the time ns.

                    • I'm still waiting for some team to get really smart and put some goalie pads on a super large Sumo wrestler and dare the other team to get the puck past the almost impossible goalstopper.

                      • How about Kovalchuk with the Wings ??

He's a free agent and i think he could come to Detroit ! He is also good friend with Datsyuk. And Detroit have never had trouble picking up big player via free agency.

                        • The Red Wings sit at a slim cap space of about $919,000 and Kovalchuk's contract is a $6.389 million. So nearly equal contract values and likely several players for the Wings to keep their top end together. Keep in mind he'd also need to re-sign to make any of this worthwhile so conditional picks would be key. Not happening.

I always thought the same thing.

Sport Science or Manwsers did a show on this saying why it wouldn't work. I still think it would.
