  • If Habibulin was so good, why was he placed on waivers at the beginning of the year?

Osgood has outplayed him this series, period. He hasn't been a difference maker, wheras Osgood has been in game 2. Osgood outplayed Hiller last series. He outplayed Mason in the first series.

I've heard this pining for Khabibulin before from Wing fans, I don't understand it. He's good but he's not unbelievable. He's a goalie who looks really good if he's facing 40 shots and he has a cool nickname. But this playoffs Khabibulin has been rather pedestrian.

I say Dom by a mile. It'd be nice to have someone great back there.
Dominic Hasek was great when he needed to be in one game in 2002, game 6 versus Colorado. But he wasn't all world in that playoff run. In fact the Wings found themselves down 2-0 to the Canucks due to shabby goaltending by Hasek. He got it together, but lets not revise history.

If Khabibulin was all that , it would show up in the playoff stats this year. So far he's been pedestrian, I think you just like his nickname.

      • at this point, Prince Hubba Bubba would be a better choice........

        The only logical explanation is:
I'm about to die and this is my Jacob's Ladder

        • Khabibulin and Osgood are pretty much a sidegrade both ways.

And anyone who thinks Hasek in 2002 wasn't incredible is revising history to validate their Osgood love. He had two rough games to start, then went off and only... I dunno... set the NHL record for shutouts in a single postseason.

          • The two rough outings almost cost them the series, Lidstrom's miracle shot gave them life in game 3.

Its not Osgood love trying to be validated here. I don't ever argue that he should be in the Hall of Fame or that he should have his number retired. Its just this grass is always greener on the other side mentality with goalies. People look at goalies in other teams and think that its going to be some upgrade and nearly all of them don't look as good as they do before they come here. Hasek was a much better goalie over his career, but he wasn't all that with the Wings, the Vezina days were behind him.

            • No Dats or Lids tonight. We have no chance to win right Chemi. There's not way we could possibly beat Chicago without them. Don't even bother watching people.

              GO LIONS "09" !!!!!!!!!
              GO LIONS "24" !!

              • Thanks, I won't.

Not because they have no chance BUT entirely opposite reasoning in that CHI has no chance.

They are entirely outmanned, outgunned and outsmarted at nearly every turn.

                Booooooooooooooooooring series.

The real reason is my kids open house is tonight.

                • With Huet in net as he has been playing, Detroit could send out the Park County Pee Wee hockey team and win this game.

Now, as I say that, watch Osgood have his worst game of the playoffs and give up 4 goals in the first period.

The problem with that assessment is that it basically ignores, well... everything.

Your "miracle shot" in Game 3 must have been the only goal the Wings would have scored right? Because... Vancouver scored ONCE that game.

Hasek, even with his Vezina days "behind him" (an idea I find amusing since the year before he had WON the Vezina, and posted a 2.17 GAA and .915 save percentage that regular season in 2002), was a better goaltender than Chris Osgood. Last season, when he was like 90, you could probably say that, though, and I would agree.

Now, again, that's not to take anything from Osgood by saying he wasn't as good as probably the most dominant goaltender of that period.

It honestly seems like we're arguing the same point from two different directions. Osgood is a good goaltender who can be great at times, and be absolutely putrid an equal number of times. The same can be said for Khabibulin. I would not trade Osgood for him, there'd be no point to that.

Osgood has been the "weak link" in the Red Wings teams not so much because he's bad, but because the team around him is so deep and skilled, and that he seems to be the most mercurial of the team. On any given night, he can make you think he's a sure fire Hall of Fame lock, then in the very next game make you wonder who the drunk schizophreniac is that kidnapped Osgood and took his sweater. Basically, just like every good to very good goaltender in this league. He's better than most, but is prone to his really bad days.

Perhaps I forget to make that distinction. I don't want people to think Osgood is terrible. God, I wish he could learn how to control his rebounds better though.

It seems to be that way. Whenever I think they're certain to lose, they win. Whenever I think they should win, they lose.

                        • the Lions are a lot easier... they aways lose.
