Heard this pointed out today - if you think this one game is an indictment on Johnson or Glenn as head coaches, just remember that Dan Quinn’s defense was absolutely cooked by the Packers last year in the playoffs.

Odds are that not both of these guys will be successful as head coaches, and maybe neither will. But one game doesn’t mean much in the bigger picture.

By the end of the season the Lions D resembled the physical traits of that Dallas D. The injuries forced the Lions base D to become a nickel package and a lot of the size was gone. The formula for the Lion D was supposed to be a big 4-3 base defense to stop the run and make the opponent one dimensional so you could tee off. By the end of the season that formula was impossible.

Well that Dallas defense was healthy as I recalll, and was one of the top defenses across the board all year and still got smoked. Sometimes it’s just a bad day and your get outplayed/outcoached.

The Lions are really in season two of their quest to do it. If you think the window is only a couple years then that's an indictment in what you think of the front office and coaching staff. There are lots of teams that have a couple year thing and get to the Superbowl probably lose and then go away. Carolina, Arizona, Atlanta are the recent ones that come to mind.

The next couple seasons are to determine if they really have built something sustainable or are a flash in the pan. That means three things

          1. Continue to draft well (with worse draft positions)
          2. Handle turnover in the front office and coaching staff
          3. Make good decisions managing the cap and that means making tough decisions on good players.

This is the point where teams either turn it into something sustainable or they don't.

And in the NFC Sirianni’s Eagles and the 49ers have been trying to break through the wall that the Chiefs have put up for the last 4 or 5 years too. Their windows are still open.

            49er's window is closing.
            Eagles window is still open.

Neither have to go through the Chiefs to get to the SB though - and they have been to 3 of the last 5 SB's.

Bills, Ravens and Chiefs? To coin the phrase from The Highlander: "There can be only one"....

49'ers and Eagles have it easy compared to the Bills and Ravens these last 5 years....
