"Coach of the Year, regardless of the league, has always felt more about exceeding expectations than strictly being the best coach. That's why I felt going into Sunday night Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell was the logical front-runner for the award."

Campbell started his Lions coaching career winning only 4 of his first 24 games.....He has gone 35-9 since then...If that isnt exceeding expectations then I dont know what is.....also does that mean Andy reid has no chance at coach of the year? THey've won the last 2 super bowls....If he had gone 17-0 that wouldnt be good enough because they are expected to be good?

Personally, I'd rather we get the Lombardi Trophy next month.

If KOC gets the award, I'd still be miffed, but as long as we win next month's Super Bowl, then I think the Lions (and fans) would be content.

Pessimists would say, “I don’t think the Leos can do it this year.”

True Pessimists would say: “I think the Lions will win the entire thing, bringing the Lombardi back to Ford Field on the same day we ruin it by invading Greenland.”

Not being political there, honest! Just trying to convey one of my cousins point of view regarding a club who regulary win nothing ——->>> “The day Hibernian win a trophy will be the day God sends the rapture and feckin ruins it!” 🤦‍♂️

But scrap the above…….. orange jesus won’t invade on a Sunday!
"...when Hibernian won the Scottish Cup final and that celebration, Sunshine on Leith? I don’t think there’s a better football celebration ever in the game.”

I remember my first varsity job. Year before I got there, they were 0-11 and had been basement dwellers for years. School was overmatched in all sports in that conference.
              Year 1: 3-8
Year 2: 4-7 -- but several near-misses and competitive in almost every game
Year 3: 9-2, finished 2nd place and beat the undefeated conference champion in a non-conference game

Coach of the year went to someone who finished 5th because they weren't supposed to do that well. I didn't win it even though my team had the most improvement because "we were supposed to be good".

Yes, I'm still salty about it.

Rewatched the game and as good as the Lions D played, Darnold helped them out a good deal. In particular there were two of the goal to go situations where the Vikings got Addison open right away out of bunch formations on the right side and Darnold just didn’t throw it to him, instead almost immediately looked left towards Jefferson.

If we see that team again, need to clean up how they deal with those formations.

Yep, there was a bunch of Darnold chokes and a little luck. Maybe as much or more, than actual great defense imo.

As you hit the quarterback the more they start air mailing passes and missing guys. The crowd had a lot to do with some of the mess.

Key play of the game was that 4th and 5 where there was a free blitzer and Goff could see him and he stood in the pocket waiting for Jameson Williams to get free. That might not impress Steven Ruiz but you have to take the punishment. Darnold isn't there yet.

Yeah the airmails and some of the other misses by Darnold were him getting thrown off by the pressure. Those 2 plays I was referring to were clearly schemed and available immediately but he didn’t pull the trigger. Stuff like that can happen if the QB is doubting what he sees, but that shit was there and he just didn’t take it.

There IS a degree where Coach of the Year kinda needs to be tied to a team's expectations. If it wasn't, then the Coach of the Year is simply the coach who has the best record at the end of the season.

That said, I do think it needs to be more than merely preseason expectations. Sure, if someone had come to you in August and said, "The Lions would be 15-2 at season's end," that... honestly wouldn't have been terribly unbelievable. But to be 15-2 with everything that has happened to the Lions, especially on defense? That is far exceeding what would be expected, and should make Campbell the favorite for Coach of the Year.

It's a testament to Dan Campbell's coaching that he might have skipped over the season where you might get COY. That is the ultimate Larry Brown award, you want a coach a team with low expectations and surpass them. By year 3 the expectations were very high for this team.

There’s still this sentiment in some circles where people still think Campbell is a meathead and the real brains behind the operation is Johnson and Glenn. It’s a load of hooey and it’ll be proven that when he still keeps winning after those guys are gone.
