Apparently not, considering how rare such trades are.

Hell, last year Buffalo had to make two deals (one of them with their personal devil Kansas City) just to get out of the first round. There were no such moves in 2023. There were a couple in 2022. None in 2021 (I guess you could argue that a first for a second was involved in the Orlando Brown trade, but I really don't consider such established player type deals to be in the spirit of the sort of trade we're talking about). And one in 2020.

Point is, that 5th year option really doesn't seem to make teams particularly more inclined to want to trade up. You'd think it'd be a big deal... but it ain't.

Fans always want the Lions to trade down, but you need to find someone willing to trade up... and there just simply aren't many buyers.

I would be interested to see how many 5th years get picked up from 25 on down.
2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

      • Now Stafford has Nakua and Davante Adams to throw too.

Metcalf went to the Steelers. I don’t think he’s going to like the offense much better in Pittsburgh unless they acquire a new QB.

        • DJ Jones back to the Broncos for 3/$39M. That’s a probably a pretty good barometer for where Levi’s value could land. Jones has a longer track record, but he’s also 3 years older.

The Broncos have reached a three-year, $39 million deal that includes $26 million fully guaranteed with defensive tackle D.J. Jones, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter, as Denver keeps a core piece before free agency.

Not that many, I'd wager. Teams usually have a pretty good idea if they want to extend a guy or cut him by the time Year 5 rolls around, which in retrospect would explain why so few teams seem to consider that fifth year in their calculus when thinking about trading up.

            • You probably only really worry about it if you are drafting a quarterback.

              • The flurry is on in FA. Notable moves:

                - Bears pay Drew Dahlman, the top center in FA, 3/$42M. Ben Johnson serious out getting that OL fixed.

                - And my pipe dream of Khalil Mack is officially over, he's back to the chargers at 1/$18M fully guranteed.

                • And if the Lions are going to play the pick game, Grady Jarrett has joined Javon Hargrave on the star DT cut list.

                  • And CD got his money - 3/$60M from the Patriots, who have an insane amount of cap to use. That is a lot and I’m surprised but NE has the money to burn.

                      • Fields to the Jets 2/$40.

Inching ever closer to a Rodgers+Steelers pairing and I’m here for that. He and Tomlin could be a wild experiment.

lol, I'm just picturing Glenn saying "Please sign him, I have no idea how to defend him".

Those last two games of the season probably cost Darnold 15-20 mil a year.

I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on

More than that. It probably cost him getting years 4 and 5.
