Yeah not real surprised either. He was giving them exactly what they wanted - for about 1.5 games. Reporting I saw said “up to $4.75M” so probably heavily incentivized for playing time. I would expect minimal if any guarantees too.

Exactly what are the "defensive needs" that need to be focused on with a big money FA or trade?
As much as we want to say Hutch "needs help," does he really? What teams are throwing out massive contracts for two elite EDGE rushers? Fuck, most teams are scrambling desperately for one.
The immediate short term needs I see on defense are CB1, a contain DE, and a 3 technique DT while McNeil recovers from his injury. All three of those could be hypothetically filled by re-signing guys who are already in the fold. Beyond that, what I'd say the defense needs are rotation and depth pieces, which can be done with reasonably priced FAs and the draft.
It's like we, as fans, continue to struggle with accepting that what happened last year on defense was a staggeringly glaring outlier in terms of injuries that no team would have been able to overcome with what was on their roster and never would be able to. If if those level of severe injuries happens again, forget what Holmes's team building philosophy is, we're going to need to hire every priest in the Midwest to perform an exorcism on the Native American burial ground the Lions somehow managed to build on top of again.
