They're probably not going 15-2 next year... but they probably aren't going to be running a practice squad preseason defense into the playoffs, either.
It's still the Lions, at the end of the day. The Lions are the poster child for collapse. I'm thinking 10-7 next year then 7-10, then 4-13 where the universe keeps them.

Im not sold on the Lions FO, way too many big misses to have blind faith in them.

    • Now THAT is a mic drop of doomerism right there.

It's the Lions. Failure is their calling card.

It's going to be something completely unexpected (like a goff trade or career ending injury and be forced into using hooker, the 2-15 furure) to be the catalyst for collapse.

Also that loss may have broken them.

I’m curious what do you consider to be the biggest FO misses?

          • Yeah, I'm confused by that too.

Every front office is going to have misses. There is no perfect science when it comes to player development and coaching hires. I'm not sure what misses Holmes has made that would lead to the franchise's downfall.

            • From a draft perspective, Brodric Martin (late 3rd round) looks like the only straight miss. He was only a 5th, but Sorsdal I think qualifies now too. In other words, that's still probably the best draft record of any team since Holmes took over.

From a FA perspective, Davenport and Moseley were misses, but they weren't high-commitment. Anzalone, JRM & Robertson are the bigger hits that I can think of. Overall not great but not bad. Not sure many teams get much out of the FA market. I'm probably missing a couple players worthy of comment here.

In terms of picking up talent mid-season off of practice squads, Holmes seems to have done well this past year finding players basically off the street to come in and contribute.

Davis & Smith were picked up via trade and they've worked out well. DPJ cost a 6th-rounder which turned out to be an overpay, but whatever.

Honestly, I can't think of a single big miss for Holmes. Holmes won executive of the year this year for a reason.

edit: Just remembered that the biggest FA miss was probably Cam Sutton. He was still the best CB on the team last year playing out of position, but still a miss.

              • Reader, Glasgow and Zeitler were all FAs. Tim Patrick too. There’s also the things Holmes didn’t do - like overpay Jonah Jackson - that go in the wins column.

Holmes isn’t perfect, but no organizations are. The key is to consistently keep stacking more wins than losses and don’t whiff very often with a draft class - and preferably not in back to back years. Those can be the killers.

                  Also Montgomery over Williams.

                    • If your only "misses" are mid round draft picks and 1-2 year FA rentals - your resume should be evaluated by everything else.
In that regard, Holmes has knocked it out of the park.
I'd still like to ask him about the motivation to draft a 25 y/o QB with a 3rd rd pick though.

To be fair, even Kamara can't run behind that O-line to the tune he's used to - and the defense has to respect his pass catching prowess.
Any 1 dimensional runner (including Montgomery) would get crushed in NO.
A 1 dimensional runner can thrive in Detroit behind it's O-line.

                        • The Detroit Lions continue to hire within, with assistant Shaun Dion Hamilton getting the promotion to linebackers coach.

Let's revisit this after next season.

It's not about some weird curse or something with the franchise karmically. It has always been about talent and for most of the time the Lions didn't have enough of it. They do now. But winning a Superbowl is hard. To act like they are going to turn into the Matt Patricia Lions is dumb.

Top seed in NFC. Not sure how you align that with poor management and coaching unless you thought it was all luck.

It was not luck. In fact you could argue Detroit was unlucky and still rolled.
